Job Description:

This position description describes the typical duties/work setting of the job. The actual duties and percentage effort for a duty listed on the position description may vary slightly and the incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned. Job Distinctions: Police Sergeant A- presence of supervisor duties; Police Captain A- absence of managerial duties.

The physical area covered by the department includes the campus with over 250 principle buildings located on more than 200 acres, and additional facilities (South Campus, FETC, Rural Life Museum, and Hilltop Arboretum) located off campus in Baton Rouge. Works shifts designed to best supplement the department in their mission to provide safety to the campus population.

30% Routinely serves as the first line supervisor and exercises daily command over Police Sergeant A and Police Officer 1A, 2A, 3A classifications on shift within the Uniform Patrol Unit. May also serve as Unit Commander of specialized work units such as Communications and Investigations that report to Division Commanders. Conducts PES evaluations on subordinates.

30% Provides input on subordinates employee performance evaluations. Makes recommendations on policy and procedure. Supervises participants in training programs such as the Field Officer Training Program for new recruits. Supervises subordinates for compliance with applicable general orders, policy, objectives, or goals as set forth by the University or department.

20% Reports directly to the Police Captain A and serves as acting supervisor of higher rank, providing direction to Police Sergeant A, Police Officer 1A, 2A, 3A classifications in the department as needed. Attends shift briefings relating to patrol and attends law enforcement and supervisory training. Must possess a valid driver's license

20% Services includes emphasis on enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, providing emergency services, crime prevention, and other services as directed. Responsible for daily activities such as role call, officer vehicle and equipment inspections, shift scheduling and report review, and is subject to the direction and review of the Police Captain A.

Minimum Qualifications
APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A VALID LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES (LEAPS 9500) TEST SCORE TO BE CONSIDERED unless exempted by Civil Service Rule 22.8d.

Four years of experience in law enforcement work.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of appointment.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.

Evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.

Required to qualify annually with a firearm.

For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.

NOTE:
All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.

Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.

Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.

NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Commission of Higher Education; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Special or Physical Qualifications
Incumbent must be able to perform all duties required of a Police Officer and maintain P.O.S.T certification at all times. Incumbent is required to obey the General Orders of the department. Incumbent is required to maintain Firearms certification on an annual basis. Physically strenuous activity relative to the nature of law enforcement is required. Must possess a valid drivers license. Per PS-18 this position is deemed essential to campus operations and will be required to report to or remain on campus during times of emergency or closure. Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.

Certifications/License
P.O.S.T. Certification- Commissioned Police Officer meeting all requirements of the Louisiana P.O.S.T. Council
Firearms Certification- Maintenance of firearm certification annually is required.
Class E Louisiana Driver's License.
