Job Description:Summary:The person in this position will be part of an innovative geotechnical engineering team of over 90 geotechnical engineers and field geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team provides a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, and groundwater and seepage.Key Responsibilities may include:Managing geotechnical projects from concept to constructionMaintaining and developing client relationshipsProviding support through training/mentorship for geotechnical engineersPreparing proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigationsInterpreting and analyzing geotechnical data to establish engineering properties of materials and foundation recommendationsCompleting geotechnical engineering analyses including seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and rotational stiffnessPreparing reportsAssist with leading and supporting the growth of the dam practice areaTraveling for periodic out-of-town assignmentsMinimum Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in civil engineering15 years of relevant work experience with dam engineering and risk assessmentsProfessional Engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within 1 yearBroad knowledge of and experience with civil engineering and design codes, standards, guidelines, and best practices to complete complex dam evaluation, design, and construction projectsExperience with established dam safety programs including Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Part 12 dam safety program requirements (engineering guidelines, supporting technical information documents (STIDs), probable maximum precipitation (PMP)/probable maximum flood (PMF), emergency action plans (EAPs), potential failure modes analyses (PFMAs), dam safety surveillance monitoring plans (DSSMPs), Owner's Dam Safety Program (ODSP), risk-informed decision making (RIDM), etc.), or similar dams safety programs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and/or states/provincesFacilitation experience with PFMAs/failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs)Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessmentsDemonstrated understanding of the consulting profession, including flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needsProven experience collaborating and maintaining relationships across officesWillingness to travel to support project needsAbility to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or moreComputer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet creationStrong oral and written communication skillsL egal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the futur eV alid driver's license and acceptable driving recordPreferred Qualifications:Graduate degree in civil or geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to geotechnical or dam engineering20+ years of analysis and design experience, including inspecting concrete and earthen dams and/or levees, especially related to dam repair and rehabilitationPrior approval as an independent consultant to complete FERC Part 12 dam safety inspectionsInterest in and ability to perform project execution and management, business development, and staff mentoringFacilitation experience with qualitative and quantitative dam risk assessmentsComputer skills and work experience in statistical analysis software or risk analysis software (@Risk or similar)A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Denver, Colorado; Fort Collins, Colorado; or Salt Lake City, Utah offices. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr's needs.NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions characteristic of industrial facilities. Assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.Colorado Applicants Only:CompensationThe anticipated base salary range for this position is $100,000-120,000 per year. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus.
