Description of Work Unit CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary A Wildland Fire Planner position is available with Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental management of Military Lands (CEMML) to be located in Fort Collins, Colorado. This position will directly support CEMML's Wildland Fire Program Manager by writing fire management plans and helping to develop and carry out data analyses.


The successful applicant will have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on landscapes throughout the U.S., provide support for local and national wildland fire management planning, use the latest science and technology including developing novel methodologies, and creatively address wildland fire management problems, some of which are unique to the military.


Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.


Required Job Qualifications Bachelor's degree in natural resources or a related field 3 years of professional experience in natural resources or a related discipline Demonstrated experience in wildland fire management planning or wildland fire data analysis Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects or tasks simultaneously Demonstration of strong organizational skills Demonstration of strong written communication skills Must be capable of walking 1-3 miles continuously while carrying up to 20 pounds over uneven terrain and to sustain long periods of standing, walking, lifting, stooping, reaching, or similar activities. Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position Preferred Job Qualifications Master's Degree in natural resources or a related field 5+ years of professional experience in natural resources or a related discipline At least one year of experience assisting or directly managing projects Demonstrated experience writing natural resources management plans or regulatory documents of any type Experience in the design and implementation of science-based methodologies Fireline experience at any level Self-motivated/self-starter and team-oriented collaborator Demonstrated attention to detail while maintaining timelines and budgets Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software, including document management and intermediate formatting, functions, queries, etc. One year or more of experience using Geographic Information Systems, including creating, managing, and analyzing spatial data Experience supervising the work of others Experience with the military Diversity Statement Reflecting departmental and institutional values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the Department's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Job Duty Category Prepare Fire Management Plans


Duty/Responsibility Work with team members on multiple plans simultaneously. Work with installation personnel to identify issues needing resolution and determine goals and objectives. Analyze fire occurrence, weather, and spatial data; perform fire risk analyses; establish roles and responsibilities; establish and assign tasks throughout the plan; determine proper wildfire response; other tasks as necessary to complete plans. Write plans, quality control the work of team members. Finalize deliverables per the scope of work and submit deliverables to installations. Percentage Of Time 60


Job Duty Category Wildland Fire Analysis


Duty/Responsibility Use GIS, Excel, Databases, scientific software, wildland fire management software, and CEMML-built custom computer code/scripts to perform analyses and determine best mitigation actions. Analyze weather data, fire occurrence data, climate data, carry out high-resolution risk analyses, and develop new methodologies based on the best available science as necessary.
