The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Institute for Policy Solutions seeks a talented, driven Director Communications & Marketing with a passion for the redesign of health and healthcare in the United States to lead communications strategy, content creation and outreach to media organizations, experts, policymakers, and key partners to further the Institute's goals of (1) elimination of health inequities in the U.S. through the development and promotion of evidence-based nurse driven models of care and (2) elevating the perception of nurses in media as skilled experts in development of effective health policy.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Institute, the Communications Director will be responsible for building and leading a strategic communications team and plan, including content creation, media/public relations, support for Institute-related events, collaboration with staff, students, and faculty at John Hopkins University and the School of Nursing on promotional projects, and advising on additional Institute communications projects, branding and/or marketing.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities Serve as the communications lead for the Institute. Lead planning, development, review and dissemination of news, announcements, and public information related to the Institute. Support the Executive Director of the Institute with development of internal/external event remarks, presentations, messaging, correspondence, and social media. Develop a communications strategy that promotes and disseminates key messages about the Institute's work and initiatives through development of articles, news releases, websites, videos, newsletters, print collateral, social media, messaging, policy communications, and other channels as necessary. Develop and actively nurture a strategic list of media relations contacts for identifying media opportunities for the Institute, including stories, interviews, op-eds, and more. Develop and actively nurture a strategic contact list of current and potential partners, including policymaker teams, health policy experts and leaders, and healthcare and service organizations to promote Institute projects and goals. Coordinate policy maker connections with the Institute to promote legislative activation of health policy recommendations and strategies backed by JHSON research. Manage and advise communications staff for the Institute. Develop and implement time and cost-efficient work processes for communications projects and staff. Manage communications and logistics for the Institute's in-person and virtual events, press conferences, and other activities designed to promote the work of the Institute. Collaborate with other John Hopkins University and School of Nursing departments, experts, and resources on Institute-related communications projects as needed. Lead and/or advise on additional communications projects in support of the Institute and executive Director of the Institute according to need. Closely follow current and emerging health policy and related political/legislative developments in global, federal, national, state and local settings in order to align Institute communications with priority and/or trending topics for the Institute and the health policy space. Maintain compliance with federal, state and local laws concerning any communications or interactions with public officials and/or government employees. Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Excellent writing and editing skills for a range of communications styles and audiences. Current and historical knowledge of evolving health policy and legislative landscapes for identifying key opportunities for Institute communications and media relations projects. Understanding of past, present, and future challenges facing U.S. health care and the impact of health inequities, harmful social determinants of health and systemic racism on health outcomes in communities of people experiencing marginalization Understanding of the various causes and effects of poverty in a diverse range of communities and populations throughout the United States Understanding of the qualities of the nursing profession and the unique role nurses can play in effectively addressing a range of U.S. health challenges. Understanding of the structures of U.S. state and federal governments, complex legislative and judicial processes, the work of government agencies related to public health, safety, and welfare, and the role of advocacy organizations in these processes. Ability to comprehend and communicate the goals, hypotheses, processes and outcomes of community interventions, research, and perspectives. Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain appropriate confidentiality. Ability to work quickly on deadline, while balancing competing priorities Judgment to make sound decisions without supervision. Ability to translate information quickly and accurately using words or visuals. Strong attention to detail. Minimum Qualifications Master's Degree in Communication, Marketing or related field Eight years related experience. Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications Experience developing strategic communications plans in healthcare or academic settings. Experience working closely with organizational leaders in nonprofit, media, healthcare, and academic settings. Experience with a wide range of content development, social media, website management, and marketing and public relations platforms. Experience in media relations and understanding of print, broadcast, and online media general practices. Classified Title: Director Communications & Marketing

Starting Salary Range: $84,400 - $149,500 Annually ($117,450 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
