Water Customer Serviceworker I Location Akron, OH : Definition This is responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in field service of residential, commercial and industrial water meters. An employee in this class installs, services, makes field repairs and removes meters and remote reading devices, turns water service on and off, and advises consumers on water problems. Works independently in the field under the general supervision of the Domestic Meter Service Foreman with responsibility for the exercise of considerable independent judgment in problem evaluation and public contact.
Characteristic Work Connects new domestic and commercial water services by installing meters and remote reading devices, locating curb box and turning on water. Checks for proper performance of meter. Provides advice and assistance to customer, consistent with division regulations, on needed repairs. Repairs faulty meters and remote reading devices or removes and replaces meters and remote reading devices in need of shop repair. Locates and operates water control valves and curb meter pits and turns off water at vacant premises or delinquent accounts. Drives throughout the service area to provide various services for water customers and to read meters of all sizes using mobile meter-reading device. Uses computer and computerized equipment to obtain account information and upload any required information into the meter reading system. Answers emergency service calls. Performs services to industrial meters such as providing tools and performing air quality monitoring checks for an Industrial Meterworker during field investigations, overhaul and repair of industrial water meters. Installs and removes hydrant meters and hose connections. Re-reads meters with a handheld device. Installs or replaces remote reading devices on meters that do not require confined space entry. Collects water samples in response to customer complaints. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in the use of hand tools and power machine tools used in the repair and maintenance of small mechanisms such as meters and gauges, or an equivalent combination of training and paid experience. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Knowledge of residential and commercial water meter construction, assembly, and connection. Knowledge of rules, regulations and ordinances relating to house water lines, meter settings, and cross connection control. Sufficient technical knowledge of plumbing and water appliances to be able to identify the causes of water problems and advise on corrections. Knowledge of division regulations governing customer service. Ability to learn the methods, tools, and practices used in the service and repair of residential, commercial and hydrant water meters. Ability to identify current conditions in confined spaces with an air quality monitor. Ability to read and follow instructions. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.
Competitive Examination Process The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades. VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application. DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration. Final appointment is contingent upon the candidate passing a psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional offer of employment.
