Description The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at the University of Central Oklahoma seeks to appoint a full-time, visiting Assistant Professor of Education. The C&I department at the University of Central Oklahoma is committed to recruiting and maintaining a diverse faculty and to creating a welcoming environment for all. Position Overview: This full-time temporary position (expected August 2024 through December 2025, with potential to start as early as June 2024) is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Teacher Acceleration Program and is contingent on continued funding of the grant. Teaches and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university. Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues, professional peers, and external stakeholders. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committees as requested. Prepares departmental reports as requested and engages in the planning, assessment system, and program evaluation for the UCO ACTS grant. College/Department Overview:
The College of Education and Professional Studies currently has 100 full-time and over 100 part-time faculty organized in seven departments. The college offers 23 undergraduate majors and 28 graduate majors. All teacher education programs are CAEP accredited. Other programs are recognized at the state and national levels with accreditations by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), and the Oklahoma Educational Quality and Accountability Commission (OEQA). UCOs College of Education and Professional Studies has an enrollment of nearly 4,800 students, about one-fourth of whom are graduate students. For further information see our website at . Duties and Responsibilities: This position is responsible for teaching twelve credit hours per semester in curriculum and instruction, including undergraduate Early Childhood and Elementary Education and graduate level Teaching and Learning in PreK-6 courses for those seeking certification on alternative pathways. The position will also be expected to teach in the summer. In addition, responsibilities could include the supervision of pre-service teachers, maintaining data for program assessment plans, and completing state required annual public-school experience. Candidates should have expertise in pedagogical theory and practice within the early childhood and/or elementary grades (prekindergarten to grade 6). This position requires teaching and mentoring of students; engagement with the department, college and university for all faculty and program meetings; service at the department, college, and university level; and active participation with the Accelerated Cohorts for Teaching Success (ACTS) grant program. Qualifications Required: Applicants are required to have: An earned doctorate degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution. ABD candidates will be considered. NOTE If the doctorate is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to Instructor. Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education (pre-kindergarten to grade 6). Knowledge of current Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education theory, research, and effective and appropriate pedagogy for young children. Excellent communication, collaboration, problem-solving, technology, and organizational skills. Qualifications/Experience Preferred: Preference will be given to applicants with: A record of successful teaching experience with culturally diverse learners, rural populations, and/or urban populations. Certification in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education. Evidence of excellent teaching as an Early Childhood and/or Elementary teacher educator at the college or university level. Experience teaching Early Childhood and/or Elementary teacher education methods courses at the university level. Evidence of experience in the effective use of technology for instruction. Candidates who are ABD in their doctoral programs will be considered for the instructor rank with the expectation of degree completion on or before the end of the first year of employment. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to design engaging and effective instruction and flexibly adjust to various instructional delivery platforms with a highly diverse student body; willingness to work collaboratively on grant-related teacher education recruitment and retention initiatives; significant familiarity and expertise with the use of online learning management systems, e.g. D2L, Canvas, etc., and virtual learning platforms, e.g. WebEx, Zoom, etc. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
