Veterinary Technician - Animal Resource Core
General Description: Assist veterinarian, veterinary team lead and senior veterinary technician in providing veterinary care for a variety of laboratory animal species and technical support for research protocols.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess and treat animal health conditions and provide technical support for research protocols.
Assist during surgical, imaging and diagnostics procedures.
Possess a basic understanding of injectable and inhalant anesthesia, airway maintenance, anesthetic monitoring and emergency intervention and pre and post-operative care.
Provide and follow up on treatments as prescribed or delegated by veterinarian or senior veterinary technician
Assist the Veterinary Team Lead in duties assigned including preparation/clean up/maintenance of supplies/equipment in surgical and research areas and operating room before and after procedures.
Provide weekend husbandry and veterinary care on a rotational basis.
Responsible for initiation and maintenance of animal clinical case records.
Documentation should be accurate, timely, and complete.
Communicate with husbandry and research staff on animal health conditions.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Regulatory
Assist Veterinary Team Lead in facility audits and ensure inspection readiness.
Help prepare the program for triennial AAALAC accreditation.
Requirements
Completes required RINCH safety training and tuberculosis and occupational health screening on an annual basis.
Knowledgeable of the safety precautions practiced by animal technician personnel when dealing with the various research animal species.
Remains familiar with Animal Resources Core (ARC) procedures, including emergency response procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Education:
Bachelor or Associate degree in a relevant subject (biology, animal sciences etc) is required.
Bachelor or Associate degree in veterinary technology is preferred.
ALAT/LAT or RVT certification preferred.
Skills and Experience:
Ability to administer vaccinations; perform phlebotomy; and handle, dose, and obtain biologic samples from rats, mice and large animals.
Knowledgeable in federal animal welfare regulations and AAALAC accreditation standards.
Ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook (email).
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
The ability to work as a team member and independently is required.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Note frequency as constantly (67-100%)
frequently (34-66%) and occasionally (0-33%) for each requirement.
Also note any lifting requirements with pound limit.
Typing on computer - Occasionally (0-33%)
Using phone - Occasionally (0-33%)
Sitting - Frequently (34-66%)
Standing - Constantly (67-100%)
Lifting, Pushing, & Pulling up to 50 pounds - Occasionally (0-33%)
Walking - Frequently (34-66%)
Pressure in this position will vary depending on the workload.
The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time.
Pressure may arise due to deadlines associated with research type, personnel availabilities and constraints around investigative staff's clinical and other commitments.
