JOB SUMMARY The Clinical Phlebotomist at Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) at UConn is responsible for using their medical knowledge to take blood samples from patients, as well as other specimen processing. The phlebotomist's duties include providing services to UConn students, including ensuring the testing area is appropriately stocked, educating students about the phlebotomy process and other specimen collection, labeling samples, and shipping samples to outside laboratories for further analysis. The phlebotomist also maintains and calibrates specimen processing instruments and is involved with other quality control standards and performance improvement activities. The phlebotomist is also responsible for managing lab-related inventory and supplies.

Under the direction of the SHaW Director of Nursing, this position functions independently within the scope of departmental and institutional policies and procedures and performs phlebotomy, specimen processing, quality assurance, and inventory management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Draws blood from patients and completes specimen processing of blood samples. Engages in specimen processing of urine, feces, and other bodily fluids and tissues. Reviews test orders for accuracy and recommends test selection when appropriate. Obtains results from referral labs. Maintains inventory for specimen collection and point-of-care testing. Ensures appropriate maintenance and calibration of all instruments used for specimen processing; monitors the currency of service records of all instruments as required by regulatory agencies. Ensures the proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste generated by the clinical drawing station, including collection, packaging, labeling, handling, tracking, and documentation in accordance with OSHA standards. Assists in quality control and other required tests to meet state certification and standards, records quality control and quality assurance activities. Participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives. Assists in patient appointment scheduling and instruction when appropriate. Performs related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate's degree in related field. Two to four years of related experience. Phlebotomy certification. Must have a demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues. Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. APPOINTMENT TERMS This is a full-time (35 hours weekly) 9-month position from mid-August to mid-May annually. This is a full-time, permanent position.
