The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a Geology Trainee/Geologist Associate/Professional Environmental Geologist to support the remediation program in the Southeast District Office in Chanute, KS. You will have the opportunity to apply your geologic skills in responding to environmental emergencies and managing environmental contamination through pollution source control, containment, and remedial action. The position will also conduct compliance inspections and complaint investigations in addition to providing technical assistance to operators and the public. Some travel is required to perform site visits for the purpose of conducting field investigations, contractor oversight, or environmental sampling activities. The job duties and responsibilities may change due to the incumbent having acquired licensure from the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions as a Professional Geologist. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Manages a limited number of projects within the Southeast District (SED) boundaries. Provides the review and evaluation of geologic and hydrogeologic investigation work plans and proposals, and ground water remediation systems for a limited number of assigned contaminated sites and are completed within programmatic timeframes. Provides field oversight and project management to professional consultants and contractors conducting Limited Site Assessments, remediation system installations and operation, groundwater monitoring, and other activities associated with various contaminated sites. The oversight is performed to ensure all work is being conducted in conformance with the approved work plan. Oversight may include split sampling, verification sampling, and observation and documentation of consultant work activities. Reviews investigation and monitoring reports for accuracy and site updates.
Responds to spills, releases, and discharges of regulated substances that may threaten or harm public health and/or the environment. Responses may be considered "emergency" in nature and may occur outside of normal business hours. Provides consultation and instruction to industry representatives and clean-up contractors concerning containment of spilled substance and remediation of impacted material. Provides technical expertise and guidance to other State employees, the public, and other concerned persons regarding the techniques, technologies and activities of the Department regarding remediation and investigation at contaminated sites. This instruction may be through formal training sessions or informally through correspondence or personal contact. Qualifications Education : Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field. Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State. Minimum Qualifications: Geology Trainee Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position. Geology Associate Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Valid Intern Geologist certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions. Professional Environmental Geologist Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field. Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear. Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position. Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to use personal protective equipment. Ability to work with a diverse group of people. Sampling, data logging. ArcGIS. Proofreading, editing, attention to detail. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. Post - Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
