The position serves as the Tobacco Treatment Specialist in the Tobacco Prevention and Control (TPC) Branch, Chronic Disease and Injury Section, NC Division of Public Health. It is responsible for providing training and technical assistance to clinical and community partners, facilitating efforts to reach individuals with behavioral health conditions, and managing partnerships.
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist conducts technical assistance and consultation initiatives to assist health care organizations and providers with tobacco use screening, treatment, and referral to QuitlineNC. It also develops and delivers training for community and clinical partners to build support and capacity for systems-based approaches to evidence-based tobacco use cessation in NC health care systems and primary care practices.
The position also leads the TPC Branch's efforts to eliminate tobacco-related health inequities among people with behavioral health conditions by working with key partners across the state. This includes working with systems that serve low-income populations such as Medicaid-managed care organizations, behavioral health systems and providers, Medicaid providers, community health centers, local health departments and community organizations. The position coordinates Breathe Easy NC, a statewide initiative that works to eliminate tobacco-related health inequities among people with behavioral health conditions, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries. It also coordinates the expansion of the Change for Life: Tobacco Free Recovery NC coalition to provide peer-to-peer learning opportunities statewide to promote a tobacco-free culture of care in behavioral health; monitors and evaluates progress on tobacco-free policies and tobacco use treatment integration at behavioral health facilities, and monitors any previous contracts with sister agencies on funding for nicotine replacement.
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist coordinates the development and dissemination of educational materials; updates and maintains tools and resources on the TPCB website for healthcare providers and employer; and assists with QuitlineNC administration. It is responsible for providing training and technical assistance to staff across the Department of Health and Human Services, local health department staff, and community partners.
