The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for an anticipated Title I Reading Specialist for the 2024-25 school year. The District is seeking qualified candidates to fill a grant funded position and will have responsibilities of working directly with students within the Title I Reading program. Position is based at Curtin Intermediate School or at the determination of the Superintendent, salary as per the current contract schedule. Master's Degree in Reading with an awarded Reading Specialist Certification K-12 is required.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WASD EMPLOYEES:
The District agreed to amend its message sent to WEA members on 4/13/18 regarding Article 41 of the new CBA and bidding on vacancies within the district. The criteria used for determining eligibility when applying for posted vacancies is "seniority date". This date is a reference to the employee's start date as a permanent employee with the district.
Professional staff who have been in the District fewer than four years, must complete 4 years before applying for internal vacancies Any employee who voluntarily transferred in to a position beginning with the 2018-19 school year must be in that position for at least 5 years before bidding on vacancies again. All bids and applications must be submitted online for consideration. Substitutes and outside candidates would complete the external application. Email for assistance. EOE.

Applications deadline for candidates is May 21, 2024 BASIC FUNCTION The Teacher/Reading Specialist plans, and administers the instructional and remedial reading program and classroom operation in compliance with guidelines and regulations determined by the administration, Board of Directors, state and federal agencies. He/she will create an environment that encourages learning, motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to establish a firm foundation to perpetuate the learning experience through the middle school and high school levels. The Teacher/Reading Specialist will utilize all resources available to establish a cooperative relationship with parents, staff members and administrators to support each student's opportunity to learn and grow in his/her educational experience.
The position of Teacher/Reading Specialist is a 188 day position and shall include active participation in the school's operation to support a positive learning environment. This position reports to and is evaluated annually by the Building Principal and/or his/her designee.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE The requirements for this position are a minimum of a bachelor's degree and appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) certification as Reading Specialist and qualifications prescribed by law, to include Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES The Teacher/Reading Specialist will demonstrate proficiency with the WASD reading curriculum, benchmark assessments, PA Core Standards, and appropriate assessments (Elementary and secondary levels). He/She will strengthen his/her abilities by reviewing innovative programs supported by best practice and research. He/she will demonstrate a thorough understanding of how children/young adults acquire literacy skills and strategies and will be able to articulate how interventions support this development.
The Teacher/Reading Specialist must be able to articulate the school and district goals regarding the educational and remedial reading program to staff, students, parents and community members. He/She must possess the knowledge, pedagogical abilities and attitudes necessary to be a successful scholar, decision maker and agent for curriculum and program enhancement and change. He/She must be aware of and comfortable using computer and technological applications as educational tools, to include utilizing E-mail, Microsoft Word, spreadsheet and curriculum based software.
AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teaches reading, language arts, remedial reading and other appropriate learning activities, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Directors. (E) Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified in state laws, regulations and District policies. Develops clear and appropriate lesson plans and identifies instructional materials on a weekly basis (minimum). (E) Provides individualized and small group instruction (as necessary) to adapt the reading curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Determines the appropriate pace for instruction related to students' abilities and explains material and subject content to students and parents. Differentiates instruction for students based upon need and works with students and other teachers in inclusive settings. Establishes and maintains standards of behavior in the classroom and throughout the school to achieve a positive and functional learning atmosphere for students. (E) Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares student progress reports, and provides accurate and constructive feedback regarding the reading program to students, staff members and parents. (as necessary). (E) Uses data to improve the learning and instruction process. (E) Cooperates with other professional staff members to identify student needs and utilize reading assessments to solve learning problems. Supports the effective learning environment created in the classroom through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers, where appropriate. Participates in the selection of books and other instructional materials. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day. (as necessary) Administers group standardized tests in accordance with District regulations. (as necessary) Participates in curriculum development programs. Participates in faculty committees, meetings and other faculty sponsored programs supporting the educational program. Maintains professional competence through District sponsored in-service programs and approved professional development activities. (E) Demonstrates regular and timely attendance. (E) Is able to speak and write in a clear, concise manner. (E) Is able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds as necessary. (E) Is able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs. (E) Collaborates and cooperates with other professional staff members and administrators in facilitating the delivery of educational reading programs. Follows all Board policies, and building procedures and submits required information and reports within identified timelines. (E) Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Superintendent or his/her designee. Primary Location Andrew G.
