The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position in the field of glaciology . The Department is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and other underrepresented groups in earth and environmental sciences. We seek an innovative scientist who uses field, remote-sensing, computational/ modeling and/or experimental methods and approaches to study the fundamental physics, chemistry and biology of Earth's glaciers and ice sheets. Areas of research focus include but are not limited to fundamental studies of glacier mechanics; space-based glaciology; glacier hydrology; glacial geomorphology; geochemical cycling in glacier systems; the physics and chemistry of ice cores; sea-ice dynamics; and biological systems in glaciers. We are particularly interested in the behavior of glaciers and ice sheets as part of Earth's climate system, including their dynamical responses to changing climate, the feedback of a changing cryosphere on the climate system itself, and larger implications, such as ice mass loss and sea-level rise. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024.
Penn's Department of Earth and Environmental Science is a collaborative and interactive department. We seek to create knowledge that advances our understanding of the physics, biology and chemistry of Earth and how it works. Our department is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences , which is comprised of 28 academic departments, the College of Arts and Sciences , the Graduate Division , and the College of Liberal and Professional Studies . Additionally, this position may benefit from connections with The Water Center at Penn , the Environmental Innovation Initiative , the Vagelos Center for Energy Research and Technology , the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy , and the Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology .
The successful applicant will have demonstrated excellence and productivity in research consistent with rank, and the potential to excel in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. Candidates should upload materials to and include: (i) a CV, (ii) a statement of research experience and current goals, two-page maximum, (iii) a one-page teaching statement to describe teaching experience, planned courses, and plans for recruiting, retaining, and mentoring a diverse student body and research team, (iv) a short, annotated description of up to five publications and (v) the names and contact information for three referees.
