What Will You Do In this team-based, customer-service focused environment, you will support the operation of the Cornell University Division of Public Safety Communications Center. You will be responsible for coordinating emergency and non-emergency response to calls for assistance from the Cornell community. You will be expected to evaluate each situation and determine the proper response procedures based on the circumstances and facts gathered. This includes over the phone and handling any walk-in complaints. This position requires the ability to multi-task, sort, and appropriately prioritize multiple frequency radio traffic to send and receive critical information. Managing sensitive emergency situations in a calm, confidential, efficient manner to ensure a high-level safety and security for those involved is essential to the role. You will also make emergency notifications and coordinate various emergency services with agencies during critical incidents. Other responsibilities include monitoring, interpreting, and initiating responses of the fire, burglar, and environmental alarm. In this role you will also be responsible for entering and retrieving data from the in-house computer system and database, along with the internet and State and Federal Criminal Justice computer systems.

The Cornell University Division of Public Safety Communications center is comprised of three telecommunications supervisors, eleven full-time telecommunications officers, and one system administrator. Each telecommunications officer receives certifications for both Basic and Advanced public safety dispatch training provided by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials. The Cornell University Communications Center also serves as a back-up center for Tompkins County 911.

The communications center operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and working shifts vary depending on seniority.

This is a unionized position within the Cornell Police Union. The staring pay rate is $26.77 per hour.
Required Qualifications Associates degree or two years' relevant dispatching experience or equivalent combination of education/experience required. Strong interpersonal communications skills (verbal and written). Prior experience in a job that required multi-tasking with the ability to work well under pressure. Must be able to manage competing priorities while paying close attention to accuracy and details. Strong technical skills and customer service experience required. Must be able to work as an effective team member and build and maintain strong relationships. Must obtain FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) compliant certification during on-the-job training. Must pass rigid background investigation, including fingerprint check, with no records of conviction, excluding minor traffic infractions. Must successfully complete required field training program. Preferred Qualifications Prior dispatching experience preferred. Radio communication skills a plus.
