Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (an anticipated 10 hours per week) Undergraduate Technician position for the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented undergraduate student to join our marine sedimentology laboratory. The successful candidate will work closely with our team of researchers to assist in various tasks related to the analysis of marine sediment samples.
Position Duties Key Responsibilities include: Micro Fossil Picking: Carefully picking micro fossils from sediment samples under the guidance of senior researchers. This task requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to work with precision. Sieving and Washing: Performing sieving and washing techniques to separate sediment fractions and prepare samples for further analysis. This includes following established protocols and maintaining accurate records of sample processing. Lab Equipment Maintenance: Assisting in the maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality and hygiene standards are met. Microscope Analysis: Utilizing microscopes to examine sediment samples and identify micro fossils or other relevant microstructures. Training will be provided, but a basic understanding of microscopy techniques is advantageous. Data Documentation: Recording detailed observations and data obtained during sample processing and analysis accurately. This may involve using digital tools or laboratory notebooks to document findings. Collaboration: Collaborating effectively with team members to accomplish research objectives and contribute to the overall success of the project. This includes communicating findings and discussing results with colleagues and supervisors. Minimum Qualifications Full Employment Eligibility Requirements can be found here:
Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term* Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications Collaboration: Collaborating effectively with team members to accomplish research objectives and contribute to the overall success of the project. This includes communicating findings and discussing results with colleagues and supervisors. Preferred (Special) Qualifications Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in a relevant field such as geology, oceanography, or environmental science. Strong attention to detail and ability to perform tasks meticulously. Basic understanding of laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Proficiency in using microscopes and other laboratory equipment is desirable but not essential; training will be provided. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
