Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the GAAP Manager, the Tax Accountant is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state tax law for the University, the Research Foundation and the 49ER Foundation; responsible for the Non-Resident Alien Tax analysis and reporting for the University and all auxiliaries; responsible for the annual UBIT analysis and completion of UBIT reporting to the Chancellor's Office; oversees sales tax recoding and reporting by Accounts Payable; prepares the analysis and recording of sales tax associated with auction sales at fund-raising events on campus; serves as the primary resource to the campus in regards to tax laws and requirements.Key ResponsibilitiesConducts tax related orientation interviews with all non-resident alien students, faculty, and staff for the University and its Auxiliaries: The Research Foundation, the 49ER Foundation, the Forty-Niner Shops, and ASI. Maintain tax related communication with the non-resident aliens. Ensure proper NRA tax reporting.Independently completes Campus Annual unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) reporting package for the Chancellor's Office.Primary campus contact for all university and auxiliary related tax matters.Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesCommunicates effectively within the University community, possesses strong communication skills—both oral and written—at a college level. Ability to explain complex tax matters in simple, easy-to-understand layman's terms. Experience extends to public accounting, tax, audit, and financial statement preparation, including handling Internal Revenue Service correspondence. Well-versed in Federal and state tax law, adept at tax analysis and research, and skilled at summarizing financial information clearly and concisely. Hands-on experience with complex automated financial systems, proficiency in PC applications (including MS Word and Excel), and a knack for web page design. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Prioritizes maintaining a safe work environment.Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."Education and Experience• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, public administration, or a closely related field and five years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience required.Preferred:• Governmental accounting experience is desirable.• Experience with payroll and/or IRS reporting and withholding rules as they apply to residents and international individuals.• Enrolled Agent designation and Higher Education experience preferred.Physical SummarySedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects.
