We take pride in being a responsive, innovative, and inclusive workforce that are stewards of the resources entrusted to us.The Sustainable Transportation Specialist is responsible for carrying out Virginia Tech's student-focused transportation demand management strategies at its Northern Virginia locations. This includes the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (Metro's) University Pass (U-Pass) Program and Capital Bikeshare's University Membership Program. This will involve collaborating with stakeholders in Blacksburg and Northern Virginia to ensure the programs operate smoothly. Reporting to the Transportation Network Manager, the incumbent also provides customer service to Hokie Bike Hub customers, including instructing people in bicycle maintenance and repair, answering questions about sustainable transportation programs offered by the university, as well as staffing the customer service desk. In addition, the position performs similar tasks at various campus and community events, such as student orientations, bike to campus days, etc.The incumbent also performs other duties as requested by the supervisor, takes initiative to support the best interests of the department and a healthy work environment, strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct and Virginia Tech's Principles of Community, and supports the university's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).Required Qualifications• Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience that equates to a Bachelor's degree.• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and problem solve.• Strong customer service skills, including the ability to resolve customer issues efficiently and tactfully.• Ability to complete documentation and paperwork neatly and accurately.• Willingness to learn bicycle mechanic skills.• Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends throughout the year.• Ability to answer phone calls and effectively respond to voicemail messages.• Availability to travel to Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia locations a few times per year.Preferred Qualifications• Knowledge of Northern Virginia area transportation options.• Demonstrated experience with bicycle maintenance and repair, including: adjustments, basics of wheel truing, flat tire repair, brake pad replacement, brake cables and housing replacement, shift cables and housing replacement, and adjustment of derailleurs for proper shifting.• Demonstrated educational skills.• In-depth knowledge of bicycles and bicycling, including safe cycling practices, bicycle facility/infrastructure types, and promotion of bicycling as a form of transportation.• Previous experience working at a university.• League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification from the League of American Bicyclists.Pay Band3Appointment TypeRegularSalary InformationAnticipated starting salary is between $37k and $42k, commensurate with experience.Review DateMarch 14, 2024Additional InformationThe successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto,Ut Prosim(That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
