Their job duties may include:
Planning and organizing survey projects, including determining survey methods, equipment needs, and scheduling. Conducting land surveys using various equipment, such as total stations, GPS receivers, and levels. Ensuring that survey equipment is properly calibrated and functioning correctly. Supervising and training survey assistants, assigning tasks and responsibilities as necessary. Collecting and analyzing survey data using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other tools. Interpreting survey data and creating maps, drawings, and reports based on the results. Communicating with project managers, engineers, and other professionals to ensure that survey work is aligned with project requirements. Ensuring that all survey work is completed in accordance with industry standards, legal requirements, and project specifications. Maintaining accurate records of survey data, reports, and other documentation. Providing technical guidance and support to junior surveyors and assistants. Survey crew chiefs may work in a variety of settings, including construction sites, urban areas, and remote locations. They should have a thorough understanding of land surveying principles, as well as strong organizational and communication skills. A bachelor's degree in surveying or a related field is typically required, along with professional licensure in some jurisdictions.
