Job Summary Help play an important role in the health of Minnesotans by supporting the work of the Surveillance and Epidemiology and Analysis (SEA) Unit of the Injury and Violence Prevention Section (IVPS) at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). This exciting opportunity will offer direct experience working with MDH staff in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) surveillance program.
This position will provide comprehensive experience in a public health agency and assist in informing current and future surveillance of children with FASD. This work will build a better understanding of the FASD diagnostic process, and identify administrative data sources that could be used for surveillance purposes
Student worker responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Collect, analyze, and interpret and report qualitative FASD data Participate in project planning and evaluation activities; and Collaborate with MDH and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) staff to communicate project results to stakeholders This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date of 8/29/25. This position is part-time and will work up to 20 hours per week. The specific hours and days of work are flexible within 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, around student's class schedule. Work may be conducted in-person, as telework from MN, IA, WI, ND, SD, or in a hybrid environment based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion.

Enrolled or about to be enrolled in a degree-seeking Graduate program in one of the following areas: public health, community health, psychology, social work, anthropology, nursing or related field.
Experience with qualitative data collection.
Abilities and skills that will be assessed during the interview process:
Communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly and present cohesive results with stakeholders and/or decision makers. Human relations skills to achieve effective working relationships. Ability to work independently and meet perform project management activities. Ability to accurately and consistently abstract, assess, interpret, enter data, and information. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of public health surveillance. Experience with qualitative data coding techniques. Experience using qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo. Experience in conducting key informant interviews and/or focus groups. Experience coordinating logistics for projects. Experience creating print or web materials. Knowledge of state law and statutes regarding data privacy and reporting requirements. Additional Requirements This position requires successful completion of a background and reference check.
