Job Summary: This position supports the Herbarium by conducting field work, updating individual specimen information, constructing databases, collecting, preparing and organizing specimens and supervising undergraduate student assistants.
Graduate students with an assistantship and Teaching Associates need to obtain permission from the Graduate School to work in addition to their teaching/assistantship.
Essential Duties: Conducting independent field work, projects include but are not limited to tallgrass prairie restoration, and inventorying local rare plant populations
Updating individual specimen names and Herbarium organization from Prantl and Engler (1890) to APG IV (2016)
Constructing databases for our Fossil collection, Teaching Collection, Bryophytes, Fungi, and Vascular plant collections, merging databases with online resources
Collecting plant specimens and preparing them for preservation in the Herbarium.
Mounting, imaging, labeling, and filing of Herbarium specimens.
Organizing specimens in herbarium cabinets.
Supervising undergraduate student assistants.
Minimum Qualifications: Enrolled Biology or Botany Graduate Students in the Summer or the following Fall.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience handling large amounts of data.
Familiarization with Herbarium curation techniques.
Must be able to work quickly, neatly, and accurately and focus on small details of large databases.
Must be able to negotiate stairs and ladders with awkward and sometimes heavy boxes.
Must be able to conduct themselves safely in remote field settings.
Students may not work during the weeks they receive Graduate School Summer Scholarship Funds.
