Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The Department of Computer Science is one of 16 science departments and curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a major teaching department with more than 30 tenured/tenure track faculty, nine research faculty, and 28 adjunct faculty, who serve more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Our driving research ideal is collaboration-as it has been since the founding of our department in 1964. We believe that computer science's greatest purpose is in working with other scientists to solve problems in their own disciplines. Therefore, we actively seek opportunities to generate new research with our colleagues and with scientists in other departments across campus, including in science, medicine, and the humanities. Numerous computer science faculty members have adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from multiple universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and even the world.
Position Summary: This DEI and Student Experience Manager manages the DEI portfolio of the computer science department. This includes budget management (grants, donations, endowments), supporting student research experience and broadening participation in computing (BPC) initiatives, developing strategies to improve student engagement and retention, assisting faculty with BPC grant writing efforts, identifying and promoting best practices, and experience leading initiatives that meet the educational mission of the department. This position reports directly to the Associate Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and works closely with department faculty, external relations, and career development teams. This position also supervises the Graduate Intern for DEI and Student Engagement.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Student affairs and development experience. Specifically, understanding student services and collaborating with campus partners (i.e., faculty, staff, and admissions); Experience with DEI topics, best practices, and education; Identifying and developing funding opportunities (i.e., industry, donations, and grants); Experience (or general understanding) in writing grants; Supervising undergraduate/graduate students; Education degree or related, with 3-5 years of professional experience in student development, counseling, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: An advanced degree in education.
