Job Description The Department Manager must possess a high level of technical knowledge and have experience in overseeing a broad range of assignments, including the most difficult and complex. The Department Manager will not typically be acting as a Design Lead, but must be capable of:
Assuring that all structural engineering meets AFRY quality standards. Overseeing preliminary design studies, project planning, layouts, and other activities which lead to the actual engineering of a project. Consulting with clients, other engineers, architects, vendors, etc., as necessary to determine the most practical and desirable engineering design in keeping with the budget. Preparing design criteria for engineering projects and equipment. Selecting suitable materials and equipment in accordance with good engineering practices. Preparing accurate structural estimates of drawings and resources necessary to engineer a project. Writing specifications in a clear, concise manner. Anticipating information needed and taking the necessary action to obtain it. Preparing detailed structural engineering designs in accordance with good engineering practice, including cost estimates and schedules, and in compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and restrictions. Organizing, scheduling, and directing the work of others to make the most efficient use of personnel and the allotted budget. Efficiently utilizing various company resources to accomplish the intended work. Supervising, checking, and assuming responsibility for all work done under his/her direction. Coordinating work with that of other designers, architects, estimators, purchasing personnel, management, etc., involved in the project. Completing work on time and within the allotted budget and resource estimate. Personal Qualifications A strong sense of responsibility to AFRY and its clients. A mature attitude. Effective leadership and management capabilities. Strong ability to coach and mentor their team. The ability to listen. The capability to solve conflicts before they become detrimental to the project and/or project team. Sound judgement and a practical approach to the solution of technical problems. The ability to clearly recognize the main objective of the assignment and its ultimate accomplishment. The ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Management Responsibilities The Structural Department Manager must be capable of successfully executing the following duties:
Develop/implement/maintain design safety standards and procedures. Training, mentoring and development of Department personnel. Managing and aligning multiple office locations. Developing and maintaining relationships with peer managers in the Americas and as appropriate globally to effectively facilitate cross-border workshare. Secure expertise where it may be required outside of AFRY USA capabilities. Researching and understanding the most current, innovative, and efficient design tools and methodologies, then implementing these throughout the offices. Collecting metrics and relevant data from projects completed to help with future estimates and for lessons learned. Being responsible for employee reviews, assessments, and salary adjustment input. Developing and managing departmental budgets. Assuring that needs for Professional Engineering licenses are maintained for the department. Maintaining utilization targets for the department. Providing support to projects where discipline project teams/team members need coaching or assistance in leading/managing/delivering discipline work. This includes clearly communicating to design leads the expectations of project delivery. Developing, maintaining, and assuring compliance with department/discipline design standards, delivery processes/workflows and assuring quality of disciplines delivery of project deliverables. Participating, or arranging for other qualified Departmental personnel to participate, in targeted business development opportunities. This includes attending meetings required offsite. Working closely with Human Resources, maintaining adequate levels of qualified personnel to meet the needs of ongoing and projected project demands. This includes, but not limited to:
Recruitment at all levels including College recruitment and Intern/Co-Op programs Retention Mentoring Resource assignment Succession planning Qualifications The classification of Structural Department Manager requires:
First and foremost, a commitment to safety and the desire to foster a safety-first culture. A bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
