POSITION DESCRIPTION
1st YEAR APPRENTICE LINEMAN
I. Objectives
A. To provide maximum service to members and the Cooperative by effectively assisting in the performance of daily activities relative to the construction and maintenance of the Cooperative's electric system within the guidelines and responsibilities of the classification.
B. To continue improving technical skills and knowledge of the Cooperative's electrical system, and practice safe work habits in order to provide for a more efficient and productive work environment.
II. Reporting Relationships
A. Reports to Crew Chief.
B. Directs none.
III. Essential Functions
A. Assists during the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution lines of various voltages, to include secondary services; in accordance with OSHA standards, the State labor Department, Cooperative safety rules and REA Specifications for Construction within the parameters of the Position Description and Specification of this classification. Performs with proper supervision and/or assists, but are not limited to the following:
Pole climbing

 
2. Hot stick work from the ground
3. Rubber glove work
4. Operating and working from an aerial lift truck
5. Operating a digger derrick truck
6. Operating backhoe, trenchers, and any tools or equipment used on the job
7. Operating fault locating tools and equipment
8. Operating and maintaining transformers, transformer banks, line regulators, capacitor banks, and breakers
9. Burying primary and secondary cable and terminating cable ends for all required terminations
10. Installing and removing meters in energized meter bases.
11. Installing and retiring poles
12. Installing and retiring conductor
13. Installing and retiring line equipment such as: transformer, transformer banks, capacitor banks, regulators and breakers.
14. Outage restoration
B. Is capable of performing pole-top rescue under any condition in the event of an accident.
C. Performs work on unenergized conductor under the direct supervision of a Journeyman Lineman or supervisor only.
D. Assists in loading all tools and materials (wire, poles, hardware and specialty tools not already on vehicles) for daily work requirements. Ensures the return of specialty tools to stores upon completion of use.
E. Assists crew leader to ensure that an adequate materials inventory exists on crew vehicles and tools are well maintained, in good working condition and properly used.
F. Assists the crew leader to ensure accurate and timely submission of all forms needed for daily operations, to include but not limited to:
1. Employee time sheets
2. Staking sheets for construction and maintenance
3. Service Order tickets
4. Material checkout and return tickets
5. DOT vehicle inspections
6. Job Briefings
G. Observes and repairs or reports all hazardous and unsafe conditions to appropriate person or supervisor.
H. Assists with the proper clearing of rights-of-way for power line clearances when required.
Drives a medium duty truck with a loaded pole trailer attached.

 
J. Participates in job training, safety and employee information meetings.
K. Assists Servicemen and/or Linemen performing on-call duties during an outage condition or major storm.
L. Ensures safe work procedures are used at all times.
M. Reports all unsafe conditions to supervisor.
IV. Other Functions
 
A. Makes minor repairs on all equipment and tools

 
B. Assumes any additional responsibilities or duties as may by required or assigned
C. Performs construction and maintenance work on overhead transmission lines.
V. Relationships
A. Internal

 
1. Crew Chief: Functions under his direction during daily operations. Informs him of any matter pertaining to the Cooperative to include system operations and equipment status. Seeks advice, assistance or information as required.
2. Other Personnel: Works with them closely to maintain a good working relationship throughout daily operations, keeping in mind the responsibility for the safety of self and others during any activity
B. External

 
Membership: To give courteous and accurate information at all times. Explains at every opportunity the services and benefits to which a member of the Cooperative is entitled.
2. General Public: To improve public relations and maintains high acceptance of the Cooperative and supports the community.
VI. Wage and Salary Information
This position is an hourly rated non-exempt position under the Wage and Hour law and overtime compensation must be paid.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

 
1st YEAR APPRENTICE LINEMAN
Education
High School graduate or equivalent is required. 
Experience
6 months minimum experience with electrical work in the construction and maintenance of distribution lines..
Job Knowledge
A basic knowledge of electricity and its terminology is required. 
Abilities and Skills
Must be capable of performing the essential functions associated with the 1st Year Apprentice Lineman classification. Must have the ability to use tact in dealing with members, fellow employees and the general public. Must possess a current Class A Commercial Drivers license (CDL). Must have the ablity to opeate a computer and/or an electronic tablet. This is a safety sensitive position where the employee holding this position has the responsibility for his/her own safety or other people's safety.
Working Conditions
Work performed primarily outside. Subject to work on weekends, at night and during severe weather conditions. This position subject to residency requirements for 'on call' and response purposes.
