Position PurposeTo help reduce or eliminate speech difficulties that interfere with each student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program

Salary:

Know and effectively communicate the Division philosophy and missionServe as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balance program for oral communication and speech improvementProvide a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of speech-impaired childrenAssist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified children with speech and language impairmentsProvide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairmentProvide screening at regular intervals and at specified levels to identify speech-impaired childrenAssist in making referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the communityProvide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet IEP requirements in correcting existing speech or language impairmentsCollaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by giving suggestions for the student's daily activitiesProvide information, support, and counseling to parents and familiesProvide in-service education and serve as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvementKeep thorough on-going records for each student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.Serve as a member of the Student Based Team (SBT) and Special Education Eligibility Committee as appropriateMaintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related servicesRequisition and maintain needed equipment and suppliesPrepare and administer the annual budget for speech therapy servicesPerform such additional tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned or delegated by school administratorAdditional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.Note:

Travel RequirementsTravels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of special education law, the special education process and state and district policies. Skills to understand and develop and present ideas effectively, document contacts and interventions, interpret data, and communicate effectively. Ability to be flexible and travel spontaneously within district; sit for prolonged periods, complete observations, and intervention plans; work under time constraints; work effectively with staff, parents, students and community; work independently. Significant physical abilities may include talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/visual accommodation. Ability to write reports with concise language and grammar. Must hold a valid driver's license and dependable transportation.Physical and Mental Demands, Work HazardsWorks in standard office and school building environments.Note:

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word and for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.

Qualifications Profile-

Certification/License:

Current license in speech pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology and/or licensure in another state for Audiology and SpeechEducation:

Master's Degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution

FLSA Status: Exempt
