Salt Lake Community College Position Title: SLCC Student Work Study - Specialist I, Peer Mentor Jordan Campus (Part-Time) Open Internally or Externally: External If faculty, tenure track status: Reports to (title): OSS Jordan Campus Coordinator Department: Orientation & Student Success-4B6 Requisition Number: W24071 Position Type: Replacement Job Category: Part-Time Staff - Variable FT/PT: Part-time Initial Work Location: Jordan Campus Starting Salary: $15.00 - $15.49 Job Open Date: 02/21/2024 Job Close Date: Open Until Filled: Yes Priority Review Date: Job Summary: Peer mentors support the transition of students to SLCC, specifically first-generation, undocumented, transitioning-out-of-foster care, nontraditional students, and student who need help who are involved in the Bruin Scholars cohort, a program designed for students to have a smooth transition and support system in college.Peer Mentors in various activities throughout the school year. Essential Responsibilities and Duties: Participate as a team member of the Orientation & Student Success (OSS) Office by: Continuous follow-up with students in the Bruin Scholars program to assist them in locating needed resources. Researching and creating activities to encourage learning and involvement in SLCC Assisting in recruitment efforts for the Bruin Scholars program Being familiar with SLCC enrollment and registration process. Being able to articulate the purpose of SLCC's general education classes and teach new students how to register for classes. Being familiar with Banner to locate needed information and assist the office with Orientation enrollment and holds. Participating in event planning and execution. The ability to motivate and excite new students. Creating a welcoming environment for new students. Assisting OSS and other departments in outreach activities for new students. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued: Minimum Qualifications: Must have a 2.5 GPA or higher (3.0 or higher is preferred). Must be a current or recently graduated (within 1 semester) student of SLCC. Must be eligible to work in the United States Preferred Qualifications: Preference will go to candidates who are:BilingualDemonstrate strong public speaking skillsProfessional in manner and appearanceA current and active Bruin Scholar Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Peer Mentors must:Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, cultural competencies, and sensibilities.Work collaboratively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments and community personnel.Gather, process, and organize large amounts of information accurately.Utilize basic computer operating systems and SLCC's computer systems (Banner, DegreeWorks).Demonstrate professionalism.Knowledge of HB 144 and other Undocumented Student resources.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
