Job Title: Senior Science Writer/Editor Job Summary: FedWriters seeks innovative and passionate Senior Level Science Writer-Editors to support NIJ's flagship publication of cutting-edge research that shapes and influences criminal justice policy and practice. This pivotal role offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with top experts within the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), drive impactful change, and enhance the journal's contribution to advancing justice and public safety by translating complex scientific subject matter for non-scientific audiences.
Responsibilities Include: Producing high-quality, plain language, and 508-compliant content across various formats, including print, web content, data visualization, infographics, and other virtual delivery methods Developing standard operating procedures, checklists, templates, and strategic plans Translating complex scientific materials into plain language for non-scientific audiences Understanding and applying sophisticated scientific methods to law enforcement issues Writing about the implications of scientific findings for professionals in law enforcement and elected officials who make policies affecting criminal justice Using plain language to describe scientific findings from peer-reviewed academic journals, making them accessible to executive-level leaders without scientific backgrounds Working closely with NIJ subject matter experts, including federal and contract staff Attending staff meetings (virtually or in person) and participating in agency workshops and presentations Interviewing subject matter experts to gather accurate and relevant information Collaborating with subject matter experts in drafting, reviewing, and revising content Required Qualifications and Skills: At least five years of directly relevant work experience in writing and editing publications and various documents Excellent writing skills and knowledge of style guidelines Proven ability to translate complex materials into plain language Strong understanding of scientific methods and their application to law enforcement issues Ability to communicate scientific implications clearly to a non-scientific audience Work Setting and Environment: Monday - Friday, normal working hours Work is to be performed remotely How FedWriters Will Compensate and Appreciate You: FedWriters offers team members the opportunity to gain a lasting impression in this fast-growing small business.
