The Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene Department is seeking to hire an Underground Senior Safety Specialist that has strong attention to detail and will work at the Nevada National Security site underground.
Key Responsibilities Responsible for providing safety support within the Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene (OS&IH) Division. Provide support for construction of assigned projects, UCEP, waterline upgrades, ASD, MSTS and subcontract construction activities and other duties as assigned. Support the underground Work Planning Center, conduct walkdowns and work package reviews, and provide oversite of work performance including off shift and non-standard work shifts if needed. Responsible for administering and enforcing the Occupational Safety program for underground operations to include construction, maintenance and experimentation activities. Develop, implement, and administer methods for accident prevention in close coordination with management and supervisory personnel. Advise Company personnel, DOE, and user agencies on matters concerning occupational safety, safety codes, and accident prevention programs. Plan and coordinate the development and implementation of training, instruction, and individual course studies for field supervisors and may conduct these sessions. Examine plans and specifications for construction and equipment operations to ensure all occupational safety precautions have been included.  Inspect work sites to identify potential or existing job hazard and investigates violations of safety codes and regulations. Investigate accidents, including those involving vehicles, to determine relevant causes. Recommend changes in equipment and processes to correct unsafe conditions. Direct enforcement of occupational safety regulations and prohibits work in unsafe conditions. Prepare and publicize safety reports, bulletins, codes, and studies. Provide resource and interpretation for all applicable occupational safety codes, standards, and technical development. Develop and administer accident and statistical reporting systems and documentation procedures. Perform other duties assigned by Management. Bachelor's degree in occupational safety or related field or equivalent training and experience and at least 5 years of related occupational safety experience. Must be able to work in underground environments and tunnels without being claustrophobic. Must possess thorough knowledge of safety regulations and be able to keep up with changes. Excellent oral and written communication skills to promote accident prevention, conduct field and accident investigations, and coordinate the development and implementation of new or revised safety procedures and techniques. Attention to detail, and high degree of accuracy required in writing technical documents and ensuring all Company policies and procedures are followed. Able to utilize independent judgment, creativity, initiative, and ability to apply knowledge and experience to resolve problems and compose technical correspondence and reports, and accomplish goals where established procedures may not be specific. Highly organized and able to prioritize and schedule multiple activities of the organizational unit. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal with all types of people in a tactful, professional, and effective manner while screening and maintaining confidentiality. Able to remember/recall extensive policies, procedures, terminology, schedules, personnel, and other details. Able to deal with pressure of handling multiple tasks, complains, frequent interruptions, and time constraints.. The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada). The U1a Complex is located in the forward areas of the NNSS. Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).  Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Must possess a valid driver's license. MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , "Personnel Security". If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program."

Annual salary range for this position is: $94,494.40 - $141,752.00.
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
