Minimum Qualifications: Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications: BS and MS required, and PhD degree preferred in wildlife biology or a related field.
Position Summary: This position will serve as a focal point of a long-term research project focused on assessing white-tailed deer movements relative to flooding and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in northeastern Louisiana. The incumbent will coordinate and conduct field research on-site in northeastern Louisiana, where CWD is established and of significant management concern to agencies and landowners. The incumbent will serve as the point of contact for state agency personnel within the study area, as well as private landowners, press, and others with questions or concerns about the field research. Likewise, the incumbent will serve as the liaison between field research activities and principal investigators in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. Given the complexity of this project, the public interest surrounding the issue, and the remote study area away from the University of Georgia, the senior research associate position is essential to the successful management of this study.
The employee acts as the primary liaison between the Warnell School and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to ensure that the research project is conducted according to the agreement between the two parties. The employee assists faculty in the development of research studies, oversees research conducted by undergraduate and graduate students, manages data sets, analyzes data, and prepares technical reports and presentations to disseminate the results of the research. The employee functions mostly independently with little supervision to conduct day-to-day operations.
This position involves use of a P-Card. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: The employee will have significant experience working independently and on a team to conduct research projects about applied wildlife management problems and/or disease ecology. The individual will have advanced knowledge of field, analytical, and communication techniques to design and carry out research with little oversight on private and public lands. Proficiency in statistical and spatial analysis methods using a variety of software. Possess competency in technical writing as demonstrated by prior publication in scientific outlets Extensive experience working with state or federal wildlife management agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the public. Comfortability with oral communication in professional and public settings. Advanced background in project coordination, supervision of employees, and management of intensive field studies with large ungulates or other wildlife species. Physical Demands: Much of the work of this position is conducted in the field in all weather conditions, and in terrain which may be in remote locations. Remaining work will be based in an office setting. Lifting at least 50 pounds and driving to perform job related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities: Oversee white-tailed deer research study including coordinating and conducting field research that will involve capture of white-tailed deer using various capture techniques, GPS telemetry, collection of samples for diagnostic testing, monitoring of captured animals, and day-to-day operations of a field crew composed of graduate students and technicians. Directly supervises graduate students and technicians.

Duties/Responsibilities: Provide coordination between the Warnell School, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and other partners. Coordination will include communication updates, budgeting, purchasing, management of controlled substances, media contacts, and landowner relations.
