Job Description

The Senior Manager of the New York Office is responsible to the Church Communication Committee for overall direction, and reports directly to the Director of the New York Office of Public and International Affairs. Because the Office's work is often a mix of Public Affairs, Legal, and Humanitarian issues, he/she may also coordinate with the Associate General Counsel over international affairs, as well as Latter-day Saint Charities.

Responsibilities

1. Maintain the Church's relationship with the United Nations

The Senior Manager of the New York Office assists in maintaining the Church's contacts with the United Nations in New York City. This is the main duty of the office and is anticipated to occupy a significant portion of the Senior Manager's weekly work. Responsibilities include developing relationships with United Nations officials, following the work of the various United Nations committees, issuing white papers tying Church beliefs to United Nations trends, attending and participating in conferences and meetings (domestic and internationally as directed), serving on relevant committees, and tracking United Nations publications and resolutions that are important to the Church.

The Senior Manager also has the responsibility of developing relationships and liaising with Permanent Representatives (Ambassadors) and other officials at the diplomatic missions to the United Nations. This duty includes making contact with officials at the Permanent Missions, hosting them and taking other steps to develop cordial relationships, tracking diplomatic personnel as they rotate assignments, and remaining abreast of Church-related issues pertaining to each mission.

2. Maintain the Church's relationship with New York consuls

The Senior Manager of the New York City Office is also responsible for developing the Church's relationship with Consuls General in New York. This duty includes making contact with consular officials, hosting them and taking other steps to develop cordial relationships, tracking consular personnel as they rotate assignments, remaining abreast of Church-related issues pertaining to each consul, and assisting as instructed in resolving visa and travel concerns.

3. Community Relations

Under the direction of the Director of the office, the Senior Manager will also develop relationships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Religious Umbrella Organizations, and New York media which address issues of importance to the Church, including faith-based NGOs and NGOs active at the United Nations.

4. Serve as Acting Director

Serve as the Acting Director of the New York Office of Public and International Relations in the absence of the full-time Director, in all aspects of the office, including direct interaction with the diplomatic community, liaising with NGOs and other organizations, tracking trends at the United Nations, providing direction to senior missionaries and interns, etc.

5. Finances

The Senior Manager is responsible for assisting with the financial management of the office.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in communications-related field or equivalent. (i.e., public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, government relations, international relations, political science, social science)

2. Minimum 9 years Prefer 10+ years or more In areas related to Public Affairs; Communications; Marketing; Media; Government Relations; International Relations, etc.

3. Requires excellent writing and communications skills.

4. Ability to think strategically and bring people together.

5. Experience with Church organization and priesthood governance.

6. Ability to represent the Church well with individuals at any level.

7. Ability to manage and coordinate numerous tasks and assignments concurrently.

8. Good organization skills are required to balance competing priorities within time constraints and often under pressure.
