Job Summary: The Scientist will work with the Principal Investigator in research related to hematopoiesis and inherited predisposition to bone marrow failure and cancer in the NIH and Dept of Defense funded laboratory of Dr. Jane Churpek at the UW Carbone Cancer Center and Wisconsin Blood Cancer Research Institute. Research includes testing the mechanistic and pathological consequences of rare inherited or acquired genetic variants identified in humans on hematopoiesis and blood cancer development with focused attention on gene by exposure and gene by environment effects. Studies will be conducted using cell line, mouse models, and human samples. Collaborations with other laboratories and investigators within the Department and outside institutions are routine. Involvement in these activities is expected to lead to scholarly work that will be published in scientific journals and presented at national and international meetings.

Education: Required
Terminal Degree
Ph.D. in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field required.

Qualifications: Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant postdoctoral or other equivalent laboratory experience
- Strong molecular biology and/or molecular genetics bench skills
- Ability to guide students and trainees on how to perform and trouble shoot experiments at the bench
- Excellent scientific, record-keeping, attention to detail, and problem solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant postdoctoral or other equivalent laboratory experience
- Experience in research involving hematopoiesis and/or stem cell biology
- Experience with gene editing is ideal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent working knowledge of basic biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and computer skills.
- Experience with next generation sequencing datasets and R or python coding is ideal.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills are essential
Work Type: Full Time: 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/Renewable

Salary: Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

-Work involves exposure to human blood products and tissue samples, animal blood products and tissue.

The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial Caregiver Check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every four years.
