Description JOB TITLE:                       School Nurse DEPARTMENT:                 Owasso Schools REPORTS TO:                  Principal/Director of Safety and Security FLSA STATUS:                 Exempt CONTRACT STATUS:      Full-time/180 days/Extra-Duty SALARY SCHEDULE:      Certified APPROVED BY:               Dr. Margaret Coates APPROVED DATE:          7/23/19 SUMMARY: The primary goal of the school nurse is to strengthen the educational process of children and youth by assisting them to improve or adapt to their health status. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: these statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required. Screenings annually and as needed: Vision, Hearing, Scoliosis, Substance Abuse Obtain health histories as needed Employ the nursing process to make professional assessments of students who are injured, ill, possibly abused or referred to by the school nurse, teachers, or staff  Provide first aid to teachers, staff, and students  Assist parents in selecting appropriate medical resources for referral  Complete home visit assessments to assess the family's health needs  Provide health screening for teachers and staff  Monitor medication administration  Perform medical procedures as ordered by the physician and assess their effectiveness  Maintain health records including immunization records  Develop Individualized Health Plans for students with chronic health concerns  Assess staff and teachers with Occupational Injuries  Serve as a member of the IEP team as needed  Health Education  Assist teachers and students to understand the individual with special physical or mental conditions  Provide education for teachers and staff in health care for students  Provide education for teachers, staff and students for CPR and/or First Aid  Present classes to students on a variety of health topics.  Participate in trainings and professional development facilitated by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) and Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) for members of the Oklahoma School Nurse Corps. Participate in Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of Education (USDE) webinars, conference calls, and virtual meetings related to school health and safety. Meaningfully contribute as an expert on student health and safety for OSDE and OSDH on school nursing best practices. Willingly provide technical assistance for Oklahoma school nurse peers Communicable Disease Control  Implement the immunization laws for the state of Oklahoma  Coordinate with the Oklahoma Dept. of Health on communicable disease exclusion and readmission  Assist with the implementation of Blood Borne Pathogen Control Plan  Community Health/Outreach  Work as a child advocate between physician, parents, school personnel and community support agencies for illnesses and social problems that affect students in school  Assess for safety hazards in and around the school buildings  Coordinate with the community resources for the needs of Owasso students  Management Tools  Document assessments and plans for students and staff  Assist in the development of policies and procedures specific to Health Services  Other duties as assigned SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None QUALIFICATION:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing  Licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse Valid Teaching Certificate by the Oklahoma State Department of Education as a School Nurse A minimum of two years of nursing experience, preferably in a hospital setting or community setting; experience with triage, community resource access, and community health problems;  KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to work without supervision.  Ability to practice independently.  Ability to delegate care and work as a team player.  Ability to document records accurately.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.  Ability to listen effectively.   Certified in Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid Knowledge of universal precautions Basic data collection skills: vital signs (temporal temperature, radial pulse, adult and pediatric blood pressure, respiration) Respiratory safety: nebulizers and inhalers Wound care: appropriately cleaning and dressing of wounds (scrapes, abrasions, etc.) Medication administration: oral, nasal, ophthalmic, otic and topical medications; gastronomy tubes; use of emergency medications such as Epi-pens, rectal diastat, nasal versed, glucagon Diabetes care: per American Diabetes Association and Oklahoma State Department of Health guidelines and per student's physician orders Procedures that may be delegated to health aides LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.   MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, sit, and walk.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
