Minimum Qualifications: Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Position Summary: This position will provide nematode diagnostic services to our clients including Georgia growers, golf course superintendents, faculty specialists/ researchers, county agents, industry representatives, Georgia Department of Agriculture, and other clients.
The responsibilities will include receiving, sorting, recording of soil/plant samples that are submitted to the Extension Nematology laboratory by our above stated clients and making these samples ready for extraction of plant-parasitic/free-living nematodes. The successful candidate must be familiar with or willing to learn the Baerman funnel and/or centrifugal sugar-flotation techniques that are generally used for the extraction of nematodes from both soil and plant samples.
Since this individual is going to be directly responsible for the accurate identification and counting of extracted plant-parasitic and/or free-living nematodes, he/she must know or be willing to learn both the morphological (stereoscopic and compound microscopy) techniques that are routinely used for the identification of both plant-parasitic and free-living nematodes at their genus level. In addition, he/she must be able to enter nematode assay results into a database system (NClinic) accurately, maintain accurate records of nematode assays and prepare data reports for our clients.
If necessary, maintain nematode population on different host plants in the greenhouse, assist with grants, and conduct basic and applied research. General laboratory management will include ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory equipment, keeping the lab neat and clean, washing and sterilizing glassware using an autoclave, disposing laboratory waste (remaining soil and plant samples etc.) properly, training new graduate students and undergraduate workers in laboratory methods, and performing other related tasks as required.
In addition to nematode diagnosis and related responsibilities, this individual will be responsible for generating client invoices, submitting a bi-weekly deposit to UGA accounting, preparing receipts for cash and check payments, and keeping detailed records of all aforementioned transactions. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: Willing to learn identification of nematodes using morphological and molecular characteristics, knowledge and experience in biology and microscopy and molecular biology (PCR, nucleic acid isolation and electrophoresis). Computer skills for entering nematode assay results into a database system. Knowledge about Microsoft Office (word, excel, power point etc.) is required for writing reports, creating data spread sheets and presenting data. Physical Demands: Work in both the greenhouses and fields under various environmental conditions. Lifting of 25-50lbs. when receiving packages of soil/plant samples and disposing both the processed and remaining soil/plant samples. Is driving a responsibility of this position?: No

Duties/Responsibilities: Learn and independently perform all necessary extension Nematology laboratory duties including: Receiving, sorting, recording of soil/plant samples, extracting nematodes from these samples, accurately identifying and counting of nematodes at their genus level, entering data in Nematode assay system (NClinic) and submitting data through the county delivery system to our clients in a timely manner. Laboratory Responsibilities: Keeping stock of laboratory supplies, making sure the laboratory is maintained neat and clean; comply with HazMat and other health and safety requirements. Training/Supervision: It may be necessary to train and supervise hourly student workers and assist graduate students, undergraduate students and post docs with research projects as needed. Percentage of time: 90
