Position Function
Under guided supervision, the individual filling this position will work in the Regulatory Division of MSCL and should employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in analytical chemistry to plan, coordinate, and conduct testing of samples including but not limited to feeds, fertilizers, pesticide formulations, and plant and animal tissue. The individual will routinely perform a variety of generalized and specialized duties related to research in the laboratory using established methods and quality controlled and safety procedures. The individual must be reliable and flexible, have good organizational skills, and pay attention to details. Salary Grade : 13

The Mississippi State Chemical Laboratory (MSCL) is a state regulatory agency housed on the campus of Mississippi State University. The MSCL has worked with its public and private partners to support industry and protect the people of our State by conducting analyses in support of enforcement of the laws governing these products (feed/food, fertilizers, pesticides, and petroleum products). Essential Duties And Responsibilities
This position will have a strong emphasis on the evaluation of performing time sensitive analyses of feeds, forage, animal and plant tissue, fertilizers, limes, and pesticide formulations. This includes receiving, preparation, and instrumental analysis of samples. The individual must be willing to embody a culture of safety, possess a strong work ethic, and perform work under ISO17025 laboratory quality system in every aspect of the workplace. Essential Duties And Responsibilities May Include Instrument and equipment use: Grinding mills Ankom fiber and fat analyzers Elementar nitrogen, protein, and sulfur analyzer Near-infrared spectroscopy instrument Gas and Liquid chromatography Oven/furnace Perform data analysis of test results Report test results into the Laboratory Information Management System Monitor the performance of methods, instrumentation, and reagents used in chemical analysis Assist the quality assurance office in ISO 17025 Laboratory compliance Assist in writing standard operating procedures Recording information in logbooks Maintaining records and chemical inventory Performing related duties as required Minimum Qualifications
Grade and salary will be commensurate with individual's background, education, and experience.
Research Associate I – A professional employee with a Bachelor of Science in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) related field.
Research Associate II - A professional employee with a Bachelor of Science in a STEM related field and have a minimum of three years of relevant experience and the equivalent to a master's degree.
OR
Master of Science Degree in a STEM related field and a minimum of one year of relevant experience and demonstrated competency. Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to, but not limited to, applicants with strong analytical chemistry skills. Additional experience beyond the minimum requirement in a regulatory laboratory conducting analysis according to strict quality assurance standards is preferred as well. Experiences Include Working in a laboratory Weighing samples Pipetting Recording results Analytical chemistry skills including NIR (FTIR) and chromatography (GC/LC), a plus. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies Excellent computer skills, including, but not limited to: Microsoft Office Microsoft Windows Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise Knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols Strong organizational skills with the ability to competently and efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously to complete time sensitive work in an environment with competing priorities Ability to function amicably, comfortably, and with initiative in a dynamic team environment Ability to travel outside of the state to attend conferences and training courses (typically less than 5% annually) Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Proper PPE will be provided. Exposure to chemicals, pesticides, and other environmental samples. Regularly involves lifting, bending, or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc. Grinding and preparing samples (feeds, fertilizers, chicken litter, and animal and plant tissue) can produce dust and odors. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Job frequently requires standing for long periods of time, walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
