The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neurology is excited to announce an open Research Associate position in the lab of Alexander Bassuk, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. This position will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and performing and analyzing experiments studying inhibition physiology in the brain using in vitro and in vivo animal models. Research areas of the lab include studying neuronal volume regulation, neonatal seizures and epilepsy, and GABA(A) receptor physiology. The Research Associate will be performing a wide variety of laboratory procedures, including conducting research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing, and summarizing the data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, facilities and equipment management, and supervision/staffing. This is a specified term position.
We intend to hire for one position at either the Research Associate, requisition # ******** , or Research Assistant, requisition #******** , based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Duties to include:
* Responsible for maintaining the lab and complying with all regulations.
* Responsible for designing experiments pertaining to EEG studies, including overseeing, and performing the setup of the brand-new EEG equipment, designing the duration of experiment, organizing the collection of data, setting the parameters to analyze the data, performing the analysis of the data, and assisting others in their understanding of the data collected.
* Conduct all lab training and training updates for lab members to ensure every member of the lab is following all university requirements.
* Oversee EHS inspections and make recommended changes to the lab to ensure the lab is following the EHS policies.
* Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing the new hypotheses.

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is a national leader in pediatric medicine. Division of Neurology
The division of Child Neurology is committed to providing excellent clinical care, educating trainees at all levels, and advancing knowledge through biomedical research. All child neurology faculty members are board certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology. Child neurology faculty members work together with pediatric neurology nurse practitioners and specialized nursing staff to deliver outstanding care in all aspects of child neurology. Faculty and staff work closely with other clinicians throughout the University of Iowa Health Care system to offer our patients comprehensive care. The division has particular clinical expertise in epilepsy, neurogenetics and neuromuscular disorders. As part of the Iowa Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the division provides a full range of treatment and evaluation including ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulator, and surgical evaluation. The neuromuscular program provides multidisciplinary care to individuals with diseases of the muscles or nerves. Child neurology clinics are held in the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital's Pediatric Specialty Clinic and in outreach clinics across the state of Iowa.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in biology, neuroscience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Minimum of 1 year research experience with demonstrated knowledge of neuroscience.
* Demonstrated experience with basic lab techniques, including microscopy imaging and brain slices preparation.
* Demonstrated experience preparing solutions.
* Demonstrated Experience using cell cultures.
* Ability to handle rodents.
* Proficiency with computer programs - specifically MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
* Excellent interpersonal skills are required including maintaining excellent lab notes and records.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a member of a team and display initiative in anticipating problems and resolving problems.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
* Experience with computational skills such as programming/writing scripts in IgorPro, MatLab, ImageJ is highly desirable.
* Demonstrated experience providing intellectual contributions to the research is highly desirable.
* Experience with ACURF protocols and submission process.
* Ability to multitask effectively, prioritize multiple projects.
