Overview: Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will focus on the physics of correlated and topological quantum heterostructures. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures Group in the Foundational Materials Science Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will work in a highly collaborative environment with a broad range of expertise, including epitaxial film growth, quantum transport, ARPES, EELS, neutron/x-ray scattering, and spectroscopy. You will perform cutting-edge research on correlated and topological quantum heterostructures, including epitaxial thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition, characterization, analyzing data, and writing papers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: Epitaxial film growth of complex-oxide thin films and heterostructures by pulsed laser deposition Device fabrication and physical property characterizations Experience using synchrotron or neutron user facilities Data analysis of structural, electronic, magnetic, and topological properties Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity Publish scientific papers in high level journals and present at key meetings Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and nurturing of ORNL values and ethics Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years Demonstrated track record in the physics of correlated oxides or topological materials Expertise in thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition Preferred Qualifications: Extensive experience with device fabrication is of high priority Knowledge of correlated-electron physics and topological materials. Proficiency with scripting or programmatic languages, such as Python, Igor, and labview Excellent written and oral communication skills Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to rapidly changing needs
