Job Summary The School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture ( APLA ) at Auburn University seeks candidates for three (3) full-time Research Architect I-V positions in the Program of Architecture's Rural Studio program. These are 12-month, non-faculty, limited-term positions. The Research Architect supports, contributes to, and increases the production output capacity of Rural Studio's Front Porch Initiative as required by ongoing externally funded research grants and contracts. This research focuses on increasing equitable access and affordability of high-performance housing in overburdened and underserved markets.
About Rural Studio : Through three decades of hands-on, place-based teaching, research, and outreach, Rural Studio is regarded as a leading design-build program and advocate for sustainable rural living. As part of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at Auburn University, the core mission of Rural Studio is the education of architecture students who design and build structures for residents and communities in the overburdened and underserved communities of West Alabama. The design-build projects are coupled with research on sustainable, healthful rural living through both housing and community systems.
About APLA : The School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (APLA) has over a century-long history of educating architects, interior architects, landscape architects and planners. The school contributes to the profession and to communities both locally and globally through creative work. APLA is comprised of four allied disciplines—Architecture, Interior Architecture, Environmental Design, and Landscape Architecture—and offers both Bachelor's and Master's degree options. Essential Functions Architectural : Provides architectural management, support, and oversight of project scopes, budgets, contracts, designs, bidding, construction and compliance with codes and standards, and day-to-day operational and tactical aspects associated with various design and construction projects.


Research : Assists research faculty in planning, maintaining, or completing research programs and/or projects involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts which require advanced level scientific/research knowledge, skills and abilities following relevant policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.


These limited-term position continuations are contingent upon availability of funding and annual review of responsibility fulfillment.


Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Level I: NAAB-Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architecture OR Master's Degree in Architecture. Professional experience is not required.
Typical salaries will fall between $51,233 – $59,767
Full grade range $42,700 – $68,300


Level II: NAAB-Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architecture OR Master's Degree in Architecture plus 2 years of experience in architectural practice and/or experience in affordable housing design and construction.
Typical salaries will fall between $58,333 – $69,367
Full grade range $47,300 – $80,400
Level III : NAAB-Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architecture OR Master's Degree in Architecture plus 4 years of experience in architectural practice and/or experience in affordable housing design and construction.
Typical salaries will fall between $67,100 – $79,800
Full grade range $54,400 – $92,500
Level IV: NAAB-Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architecture OR Master's Degree in Architecture plus 4 years of experience in architectural practice and/or experience in affordable housing design and construction AND must have completed architectural licensure.
Typical salaries will fall between $76,367 – $84,400
Full grade range $60,300 – $108,500
Level V: NAAB-Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Architecture OR Master's Degree in Architecture plus 6 years of experience in architectural practice and/or experience in affordable housing design and construction AND must have completed architectural licensure.
Typical salaries will fall between $87,900 – $106,400
Full grade range $69,400 – $124,900

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities Ability to provide architectural management, support, and oversight of project scopes, budgets, contracts, designs, bidding, construction and compliance with codes and standards, and day-to-day operational and tactical aspects associated with various design and construction projects. Ability to assist researchers in planning, maintaining, or completing research programs and/or projects involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts that require advanced level scientific/research knowledge, skills and abilities in following relevant policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.


Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are required. Knowledge of software used in architectural design, representation, and communication—such as AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe CS,—and basic office productivity software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).


Minimum Technology Skills Minimum License and Certifications Desired Qualifications
Desired Qualifications Desired qualifications include: evidence of interest and ability to contribute within a collaborative, cross-disciplinary team; demonstrated ability to interface with external consultant and research partners and collaborators. Experience in housing design and construction.
