Job Summary
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs radio equipment containing transmitting apparatus. This includes mobile, handheld, and base radios, cellular phones, wireless microphones, range transmitters and receivers, repeaters (global and local) and remote transmitters. Installs radio, computer, and life safety equipment in district vehicles. Programs communication equipment. Oversees and assigns work to assistant technicians and monitors their work. May, on occasion, work with electronic security and safety systems personnel. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position. Essential Functions Plans, installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains district communication equipment. Performs preventive maintenance. Recommends type of equipment that may be used by the district for wireless two-way communications. Uses specialized equipment, to test and repair communication equipment such as signal tracing devices, power supplies, oscilloscopes, frequency counters, multi-meters, service monitors, system analyzers, spread spectrum receivers, spectrum analyzers, duplexers, filters, Thruline watt meters, RF milli-volt meter and curve tracers. Programs frequencies and operating parameters into communication equipment. Configures or modifies radio interface boxes to connect newer equipment to the computers. Must maintain confidential information. Required Education and Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Must have a valid Utah driver license. Must have and maintain an FCC general radiotelephone license or equivalent NABER certification. Must keep abreast of developments in the field. Successful completion of two years of specialized training outlined by the department to include training in electronics, electronics theory, and repair. Required Prior Experience
Must have a minimum of four years of job related and carefully designed work experience as outlined in the apprenticeship program. Required Knowledge and Skills Requires good knowledge of practical theory in electronics technology, FR, and electrical theory. General knowledge of a variety of electronic related test equipment and tools. Working knowledge of mechanical systems and be computer literate. Needs to be familiar with a variety of communication equipment including outdated components that may need repair without documentation. Must be skilled in interpersonal relations. Must be skilled in oral and written communications. Must be proficient in all types of hand tools, soldering, removal, and repair of surface mount components on multi-layered boards. The ability to diagnose complex problems (some without manuals or other data) in a timely manner. Must be able to read schematics, recognize standard electronic industrial symbols and codes. A basic knowledge of metal fabrication. A basic understanding of other non-radio related equipment. Familiarity with vehicle wiring systems and vehicle codes and warranties that need to be maintained. Ability to develop specialized and innovative approaches to repair and replacement of district designed systems. Working knowledge of software and hardware related to communication equipment. Assigned Decision Making Makes diagnostic, repair and replacement decisions concerning all components and equipment serviced. Sets specifications for the purchase of parts and supplies. Decides to condemn worn out or obsolete equipment and processes necessary paperwork. Must decide with school personnel the least disruptive times and methods of equipment repair and installation while maintaining a full work schedule. Interactions with Others
Works directly with district employees, police department, contractors, school and district administrators, custodian, vendors, and the public. Participates in the state communications committees (UCAN). Supervisory Responsibility
Supervises assistants and hourly employees and monitors their work. Budget Responsibility
NA Working Environment
Works under a variety of conditions including cold and hot, dusty, noisy, and enclosed environments. This includes attics, crawl spaces, access tunnels, and utility rooms. These areas often expose the employee to high voltage, asbestos, fiberglass insulation and other conditions. May require the use of protective clothing. May work some irregular hours in emergencies. Physical Requirements – Not limited to the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and/or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Repetitive effort handling light, average and heavy weight materials. Moving of objects usually does not exceed 100 pounds.
