What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1 / Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level Project Engineer 1 ($90,000- $147,100)
As a Project Engineer, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to lead and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others. In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Project Engineer 2 performs the following duties: Develop scoping and design phases. Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements. Review project engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating changes; and taking corrective action when required. Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as building official, fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution. Application of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS), performance reporting, and variance analysis. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing to supervisors, peers and other organizations. Aptitude for collaborative problem solving with others, including SMEs, construction personnel and peers. Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language. Desktop automation skills required (MS Office Suite). Fundamental knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems. Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Additional Job Requirements for Project Engineer 2:
Demonstrative ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language. Knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties described above. Experience with engineering work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating. Proven ability to conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques. Working knowledge of infrastructure or utility design, codes and standards. Experienced with projects in scoping, design, construction, change management, and engagement with field personnel, or a combination of these. Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Desired Qualifications: Engineer in Training Certificate. Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes. Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6. Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects Advanced degree in relevant field. Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes. Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.
