Job Summary:
The Principal provides leadership for the school staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive educational programs, and administers the programs in
according to division goals, school board policies, administrative rules and regulations. Essential Job Functions: Provides an instructional program consistent with the goals and objectives of the school division. Exercises leadership for the organization, administration, and supervision of all curricular and co-curricular programs of the school. Provides for the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and fosters good interpersonal relations among students and staff. Exerts leadership ensuring the effective implementation of the district-adopted curriculum. Works with the school staff and community to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and appropriate student behavior. Develops appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, and safety of the children assigned to the school. Utilizes available central office administrative and supervisory personnel to insure an effective instructional program. Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff and establishes individual programs for improvement consistent with the division's staff development program. Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual performance and provides for effective recorded evaluation reports of classified staff according to district procedures. Assigns students to classes, programs, and activities designated to promote maximum learning. Organizes and supervises matters related to student registration, scheduling, orientation and the development of the master schedule. Advises the personnel office of staff needs, and participates in the recruitment, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, non-renewal, and dismissal of licensed and classified personnel. Works with other school and division administrators to provide for horizontal and vertical articulation of the instructional program and unity of purpose. Supervises and evaluates all student activities and athletic programs, and ensures appropriate student discipline at all school sponsored events. Fosters effective home-school communication by providing opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss student progress and other matters of mutual concern, and by encouraging community involvement in school activities. Fosters effective school-community relations by working with advisory groups and community social service agencies, and by facilitating community use of the school as established by school board policies. Promotes good working relationships among staff members. Devises and administers a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division instructional and administrative goals; to supervise the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds. Exercises leadership in the development, implementation, and interpretation of school board policies and division regulations. Maintains proper utilization, care and attractiveness of buildings and grounds. Involved in professional enrichment to the extent necessary to keep abreast of developments in high school education and in the field of education generally. Develops and maintains a good program of public relations in order to further the community's understanding and support of the educational program of the school. Maintains a good relationship with the school PTA/PTO organization and cooperates in the programs sponsored by PTA/PTO groups. Recommends the removal of an employee whose work is unsatisfactory and who has not responded to an established program for improvement. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understanding of best practices in curriculum design, assessment, and instruction across various grade levels. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and policies governing education, including student rights, special education, and labor relations. Familiarity with school funding formulas and the ability to manage a budget effectively. Understanding of adolescent development, behavior intervention, and effective strategies for student discipline. Proficiency in educational technology tools and applications used for instruction, assessment, and communication. Ability to motivate, inspire, and collaborate with staff, students, and parents. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences. Ability to analyze situations, identify solutions, and make sound decisions. Ability to provide constructive feedback to teachers and support their professional development. Skilled in mediating disputes and fostering positive relationships. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage a heavy workload, and meet deadlines effectively. Skilled in maintaining accurate records, developing schedules, and managing resources efficiently. Ability to connect with staff, students, parents, and community members to create a positive and inclusive school environment. Education and Experience:
Required Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement, or provisional endorsement, as a Principal Five (5) years of successful, full-time, teaching experience; two (2) in the level of education for which considered Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. This position is evaluated annually. Additional compensation awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees. New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
