JOB SUMMARY The Laboratory of Dr. Dan Fabris in the Chemistry Department, at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead the investigation of the structure/function relationships in selected viral RNA systems. This project is part of a broad effort aimed at elucidating the mechanism by which RNA modifications and drug-like ligands affect function by enacting putative conformational changes. Highly motivated individuals holding a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field, and experience in at least two of RNA biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysical techniques are encouraged to apply.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent will be responsible for the following tasks:
Conduct research aimed at elucidating the effects of covalent modifications and ligand binding on the folding of regulatory regions of the genomes of hepatitis C, HIV-1, and SARS-CoV-2. Help elaborate hypothesis; design experimental strategy; perform and troubleshoot experiments. Produce and purify selected RNA constructs through recombinant techniques. Carry out enzyme modification and ligand binding experiments. Utilize native mass spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) mass spectrometry to perform sequencing and observe the outcome of modification/binding. Perform proper control experiments by using a variety of spectroscopic and electrophoretic techniques. Optimize and troubleshoot current experimental procedures, as needed. Carry out data analysis and interpretation; generate summaries, graphs, and figures. Write publications; participate in dissemination. Train and lead a team of undergraduate and graduate research assistants. The incumbent will be expected to use initiative in the planning and execution of the different tasks; maintain the research productivity necessary to cultivate a presence in the scientific community; develop a good understanding of how to best prioritize the various tasks according to the situation on the ground; maintain the maximum possible flexibility to facilitate the solution of unforeseen problems. The incumbent will report directly to Dr. Fabris, the laboratory's principal investigator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or life sciences-related fields. Experience in RNA biochemistry, molecular biology, culturing cells, and performing bioassays. Direct experience with mass spectrometric analysis is a must. APPOINTMENT TERMS The start date for this position is anticipated for Spring/Summer 2023. The position is for an initial one-year appointment and is potentially renewable for a second year. Continuation beyond two years is contingent upon future external funding applications. The salary for this position will be determined by NIH guidelines.
