The Communications Specialist serves as the primary social media contact for routine content. This position supports communication efforts for Sedgwick County Department of Corrections by working with liaisons. This position plans and conducts communications programs designed to create and maintain a favorable image. The Communications Specialist promotes Sedgwick County Department of Corrections branding and awareness of services.
Primary point of contact for communications/marketing content and other methods of communicating with the public and all stakeholders.
Coordinate communication efforts for the Department of Corrections; develop content for outlets. Research opportunities to streamline and enhance web presence and services to citizens. Provide recommendations for new communication methods and opportunities, including social media. Participate in the research and development of video concepts, new trends, and ways to present information. Coordinate written and verbal communication for internal messaging to employees.
Manage DOC internal and external content Research opportunities to improve employee communication and engagement efforts. Assist with organizational messaging for email communications, training, presentations, etc. for DOC leadership. Create a SharePoint communication board. Assist senior management with "telling their story" by providing input to Strategic Communications for use on social media platforms. Coordinate community engagement and awareness of the department.
Attend community events and stakeholder meetings as a representative for DOC. Develop and distribute promotional materials. Publish a department newsletter. Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County). Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs. Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.
Preferred Qualifications: One year of formal education in communications, public relations, or a related field. Associate degree with course work in communications or a related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
