Job Title:Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy ManagerDepartment:Retail Rx | OSU Specialty Pharmacy Ackerman Scope of Position The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) Department of Pharmacy's mission is to improve people's lives through pharmacy practice innovation, comprehensive medication education, and collaborative clinical and practice research. The Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy Manager acts in a front-line supervisory role within the Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy for the Lead Pharmacists, Staff Pharmacists and Pharmacy Interns. In this role, the Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy Manager maintains functional expertise, provides patient care, and leads and participates within appropriate hospital or departmental committees, in addition to direct supervision of groups noted above.
Position Summary The Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy Manager provides oversight for the day-to-day operations of specialty pharmacy services, implements the department strategic plan, and takes ownership for process improvement related to the provision of high-quality, cost-effective pharmaceutical care. This position oversees hiring, orientation and evaluation of Lead and Staff Outpatient Specialty Pharmacists and Pharmacy Interns; identifies and resolves service problems; conducts research in pharmacy practice; manages personnel; assists with the financial management and budgeting of the department; provides on-line staffing; and participates in the implementation of new technology to improve services, patient care, patient safety, and educational opportunities for staff and students.
The position can be further summarized as follows:
Coordinates and implements specialty pharmacy services including mail order delivery, customer service and adherence monitoring Identifies opportunities for new business generation with clinics and teams Conducts continual assessment and improvement of the department's performance Maintains appropriate quality and service indicators Participates in the selection of outside services as needed Ensures compliance with appropriate patient care and business practices and regulatory and accreditation agencies Monitors adherence to customer service standards Duties and Responsibilities 40% Professional Practice Activities Approves new drug orders in collaboration with other pharmacists, technicians, nurses, and physicians Maintains patient profiles Screens for drug interactions (including drug-drug, drug-herb/dietary supplements, drug-food interactions in collaboration with Registered Dieticians) Prevents, detects, manages, and documents adverse drug reactions to minimize adverse events in patients. Performs clinical laboratory value review to ensure appropriate dosing for safe and efficacious use Provides patient management services including the patient initial assessment and re-assessment, planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating various care plan options to meet the patient's needs Maintains an appropriate care plan within the EMR to monitor patient clinical progress Maintains accuracy and timeliness in drug dispensing to ensure a high level of patient care Orchestrates appropriate documentation and medication delivery or pick-up based on patient preference Responds to drug information requests from all internal and external patients and health care professionals Performs patient education in collaboration with nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals Evaluates providers' medication orders for appropriateness Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals in a courteous and professional manner Documents clinical activities appropriately in the Electronic Medical Record, the pharmacy dispensing system, and the case management system Review and perform interdisciplinary communications for initiation, continued use, hold, or discontinuation of medication therapy Communicates patient care concerns to the appropriate pharmacy clinical specialist or other health care provider Performs adjudication of insurance claims and coordination with secondary and tertiary payors Communicates with insurance companies and internal financial assistance members as necessary to resolve payment issues Communicates effectively with appropriate personnel in a clear and concise manner. Obtains and maintains credentialing under The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to perform privileged activities
25% Supervisory Activities Recruits, hires, and evaluates performance of personnel Resolves personnel problems and administers corrective action to staff when appropriate Sets performance and behavior expectations for staff Models workplace behavior, provides positive feedback, and takes advantage of opportunities to coach staff to be successful and satisfied in their work Reevaluates pharmacy services provided to areas of responsibility Develops and maintains policies and procedures in collaboration with Department of Pharmacy leadership Develops and implements process and quality improvement activities related to pharmaceutical care provision in coordination with Department of Pharmacy leadership Coordinates professional training, competency, and quality review activities Responsible for completion of Personal Performance Plan (P3) of Outpatient Specialty Pharmacists and Pharmacy Interns with input of the Lead Outpatient Specialty Pharmacists
10% Customer Focus/Team Work Develops professional working relationships with other hospital and University departments to improve the high-quality care provided to patients and communicates that information to the appropriate personnel Participates and represents Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy services in hospital and Department of Pharmacy committees Meets commitments and responds to requests in a timely manner Communicates effectively with appropriate personnel in a clear and concise manner
10% Compliance Collaborates with Lead Outpatient Specialty Pharmacists to ensure that all specialty pharmacy operations are compliant with University Business and Finance policies Ensure specialty pharmacy compliance with applicable Ohio and Federal law Maintain compliance with URAC and ACHC accreditation standards
10% Financial Management Identifies new opportunities for Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy business alone and in partnership with clinical areas serviced Maintains and monitors inventory in areas of responsibility Performs tasks within cost allowance while maintaining quality Creatively identifies and utilizes resources efficiently
5% Teaching/Training/Educational Activities/Research Participates in the orientation and training of volunteers, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, undergraduate and graduate students, pharmacy residents, and other hospital staff Maintains competency by attending seminars, CE programs, and through outside readings Committed to personal growth and development of his/her staff Fosters strong work ethic with the highest quality workmanship for his/her area

Minimum Qualifications For Hire: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and 1-3 years of experience in hospital pharmacy or an equivalent combination of education and leadership experience. Advanced degree (PharmD/MS) and residency preferred. Licensed or eligible for licensure in Ohio.
Ongoing: Performs professional, supervisory, and teaching functions outlined above. Continues to meet competency and licensure expectations of a staff pharmacist.
Job Relationships Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises Lead and specialty pharmacist staff. Provides information relative to staff performance for use in performance evaluations for staff in the specialty pharmacy area. Documents and discusses inadequate performance with the above individuals when appropriate (i.e., tardiness, improper techniques, etc.). Manages staff schedules on a daily basis.
Contacts: Daily contact with physicians, nurses, pharmacy directors, managers from other health care professions, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, and graduate and undergraduate students. Weekly contact with administrative personnel in the Pharmacy Department.

Occasionally move up to 30lb objects (i.e. IV admixtures, stock boxes) from one level to another. Occasionally transport up to 30lb objects (i.e. IV admixtures, stock boxes) Occasionally push 50lb objects (i.e. biohazard boxes, stock carts, crash carts) so that the object moves toward you. Frequently position oneself without moving about (i.e. preparing med bins, preparing IV admixtures) Maneuver around area(i.e. preparing medications, placing stock, answering door/window) Simultaneously perform multiple functions Regularly obtain medications from stock. Maneuver in any direction (i.e. obtaining medications from various heights (floor to 8'), obtaining supplies, preparing IV admixture) Constantly handle by seizing (i.e separating IV admixtures, grasping syringes, and other supplies, opening medication packages, answering telephones) Manipulate objects (i.e. working with unit dose pharmaceuticals, dialing telephone, manipulating syringes and other pharmacy supplies, packaging pharmaceuticals, using a typewriter, computer keyboard) Produce clear, intelligible speech 100% of the time (i.e communication with hospital and pharmacy staff) Understand verbal communication 100% of the time (i.e. communication with hospital and pharmacy staff) Walk and/or push a cart for an extended period of time (i.e. delivery of medication to all nursing units) Work Environment The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. working around moving parts, carts, machines; working with sharps (i.e. needles, syringes, etc.), medications (i.e. chemotherapy, antibiotics, ionizing radiation, etc.), chemicals (i.e. laboratory and/or cleaning agents). Employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks or gloves.
