Under direction of a Supervisor Operations & Safety Section, PUC, the incumbent executes the Commission's safety oversight responsibilities of railroads complex investigative and surveillance activities with respect to working on a variety of projects in the field of railroad operating practices within a systems safety framework. Tasks may include field surveys and investigations, routine or focused inspections of railroad common carriers, research and analysis to evaluate railroad safety policies and existing regulations governing railroad operations, and other work as required. The incumbent must pass a certification process under the auspices of the Federal Railroad Administration.
The incumbent will have an assigned inspection territory and will work predominantly in the field; therefore, for effective and economical time management, the incumbent has a home office in his/her territory. However, he/she will be available for other statewide assignments and/or tasks, as deemed necessary. Incumbent will also work with State, Federal and industry organizations. Incumbent will be required to travel, including overnight stays, and on occasion be required to work unusual hours. This position spends 75% of time working in the field. During field work the incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment, including safety vest, hard hat where required and approved safety footwear. This position also requires use of written and oral communication skills.
Possession of a valid California Driver's license, Class C is required. Climbing up and down locomotive engines stairs is also required while conducting Operations testing with or without the crew being present, ensuring the locomotive operating rules are being adhered to.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience investigating Derailments and Accidents. Overall work experience related to Railroad operations. Experience relating to GCOR/ABTH/Safety Rules. Knowledge to recognize unsafe practices, understanding CFR. Benefits Required Application Package Documents
