Description The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVa) seeks candidates for an Academic General Faculty (AGF) position in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering (SIE: ) to lead the school-wide Engineering Business Minor, as well as teach in the SIE degree program. SIE manages the SEAS Engineering Business Minor, an innovative and popular minor focusing on business fundamentals, innovation, new product development, and technology entrepreneurship. In addition to the traditional on-grounds degree programs in systems engineering, the SIE Department also offers degree and certificate programs designed for working professionals and others who prefer to earn an advanced degree or certificate without becoming a residential student. This position is a general faculty position at a rank commensurate with experience based in Charlottesville at our principal location.
The SIE department is committed to creating and benefiting from an environment where a diverse group of capable, inspired individuals interact and collaborate to learn and advance knowledge without barriers. This position will lead the teaching of the Engineering Business Minor, the academic management of the minor, and its administration. Applicants must be interested in and able to teach a broad set of courses in our EBM curriculum at any level. Courses include business fundamentals, product development, technology entrepreneurship, innovation, and others relevant to engineering business. Course load will typically be two lecture or project-based sections per semester based on the faculty's range of teaching, service, and research activities. This role will also recruit and manage the teaching team for the EBM and related technology entrepreneurship courses. The teaching team is expected to be composed of part-time instructors, either adjunct lecturers or loaned faculty from other departments. Additionally, this role will act as the principal advisor to students and other faculty interested in the EBM and technology entrepreneurship courses. The SIE Department's Operations team will provide administrative and operational support via a half-time staff position, who will be supervised by the EBM AGF. In addition to EBM-related courses, the AGF may also be responsible for teaching courses in the systems engineering degree program, conducting and engaging in educational and other research activities, participating in service activities in SIE, and participating in SIE outreach programs (Accelerated Master's Degree Program [AMP], online programs, training program, certificate programs, conference activities, industry events, etc.) as appropriate. Qualifiations The successful applicant has a Ph.D. in systems engineering, engineering management, or a related field, teaching experience at the university level, and well-developed oral and written communication skills. The AGF candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and self-confidence to interact effectively with faculty, staff, working professionals, and industry/research sponsors. They should also deeply understand engineering business and technology entrepreneurship, product development, systems analysis, systems thinking, and systems engineering methods. They should also be able to communicate this understanding across various domains and disciplines and at all degree levels. The candidate should also have relevant engineering business experience in the private sector. . In addition, the candidate should have demonstrated research/professional activities, including publications, funded research, or other related professional activities.
