Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
Position Summary
The NNP functions as a primary care provider to patients assigned to the Michigan State University neonatologists at the Sparrow Hospital Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU). The NNP will report to the medical director of RNICU. The successful candidate will be expected to:
Assess, plan, and evaluate medical care in collaboration with MSU neonatologists
Report patient care accurately and concisely in patient care rounds and problem-oriented documentation
Collaborate with the health care team in planning and coordinating care for patients and their families through care conferences
Order diagnostic studies and therapeutic measures in collaboration with the responsible physician
Order medications utilizing approved RNICU goals, guidelines, and protocols (including blood and blood protocols)
Attend high-risk deliveries
Resuscitate and stabilize newborn patients
Determine need for and perform core specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and other procedures, including but not limited to:
Initiation and management of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Endotracheal intubation
Initiation and management of ventilatory support
Lumbar puncture
Venipuncture
Percutaneous, radial, posterior tibial, and dorsalis pedis arterial cannulation
Arterial puncture
Urethral catheterization of the bladder
Thoracentesis
Peripheral intravenous catheter insertion
Umbilical venous catheterization
Umbilical artery catheterization
Percutaneous central venous catheterization
Perform the following procedures in consultation with a neonatologist (unless in life threatening situations):
Exchange transfusion
Initiation of oscillator ventilator support
Initiation of inhaled Nitric Oxide
Initiation of therapeutic hypothermia
Pericardiocentesis
Thoracotomy for chest tube insertion
Provide direction to neonatal transport nurses for transport of patients, or participate in transport when appropriate
Provide consultation for patients in the mother baby unit, delivery room, pediatric floors, ED and Perinatal areas
Provide leadership by:
Assisting in clinical supervision and teaching of residents, advanced practice nursing students, and PA students
Participating in performance evaluations
Formulate long-term and short-term goals based on self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses
Participate in the formulation, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures in the RNICU, as appropriate
Participate in quality of care and performance improvement
Maintain a climate conducive to open communication
Act as a role model and resource for peers, students, residents, and nursing staff
Maintaining a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; the Corporate Compliance Plan; Code of Ethics; and other policies and procedures to ensure adherence to standards of honest, ethical, and professional behavior
Serving as a model representative of Michigan State University by demonstrating adherence to customer service standards, and by respecting the privacy and confidentiality of all patients
Demonstrating knowledge of and respect for patient, provider, and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols defined under HIPAA
Following established HIPAA privacy procedures
Maintaining and protecting patient rights under the standards established by HIPAA
Contribute to research by:
Applying researching findings in practice and teaching
Supporting and participating in research activities
Promoting understanding of research projects and/or findings among neonatologists, nursing students, staff, and peers
Follow the guidelines of RNICU staffing developed by the medical director
Staffing guidelines follow MSU employment guidelines
Participate in covering RNICU during weekdays, weekend days, weeknights, weekend nights and Holidays
Scheduling hours can be variable to meet the need of patient care in RNICU
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Masters in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area or a Master's Degree in Nursing; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in direct nursing care in a specialized area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan. May require certification by the American Nurses' Association in a specialty area.
Desired Qualifications
Clinical knowledge and skill necessary to formulate nursing and medical interventions in the RNICU environment. Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria. Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other associates.
