Location:  USA | Canaan, Connecticut
Job Summary We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Minerals Production Technician, at our  Canaan, CT location. The  Minerals Production Technician position will screen, crush and dry stone to meet specifications as finished product and as a supply for other mill operations when working in the Secondary, Crushing and Drying area and to keep the mills running properly to produce limestone products and to load/ship the products based on customer needs when working in the Raymond Mill and Screened Stone areas.
*The Minerals Production Technician position is a continuum beginning at Minerals Production Technician I and progressing through Minerals Production Technician IV as skills are gained. Raymond Mill Operations -  Run Mills: Follow established procedure for start-up and shutdown of equipment. Obtain sample of product from upper level of mill area, at a minimum, every two hours and manage grinds. Provide samples of product to the lab for analysis. Troubleshoot equipment problems as they arise and determine best course of action to take to correct the issue. Determine the level of the product and feed bins using knowledge of the inventory levels at the start of the shift as well as production rates of the current shift. Monitor the product and feed bin inventories and adjust, as necessary. Unplug elevators, mills and screws when needed. Make sure all water pumps are operational to prevent flooding equipment in certain areas. Load Box and Flatbed Trucks: Obtain and review bill of lading instructions. Gather lot numbers for product and check information in the computer to determine if product is in specification to what is to be shipped. Inspect the truck/trailer that will be loaded with product. Ensure pallets are free of dust and/or damage. Exchange any ripped bags from any layer of pallets for new bags if necessary. Use fork truck to move pallets of product onto truck following loading pattern to comply with necessary weight distribution for the truck. Communicate any tarping requirements as needed to truck drivers. Load Bulk Trucks & Railcars: Using a fall arrest system, open lid on top of tanker and inspect the inside to ensure no contaminants exist. Put product hose into opening, and open valves. Monitor product level in tanker filling to the necessary weight. Obtain sample of product from pipe after filling tanker/railcar and seal the tanker/railcar back up. Instruct trucker to sample the bottom of the trailer. Clean off all excess dust from tank/railcar before shipping (using water/compressed air). Bag Product: Prior to bagging, stamp each bag with the product name. Place bag onto product spout and fill up the bag with product (50 pounds). Move the full bag of product from the spout onto a pallet, stacking each bag of product neatly on the pallet in appropriate pattern and height, as per the established procedure based on product and/or customer specifications. Check bag weight periodically to ensure the bag weight is accurate. After each pallet is full, stamp the product placard with the lot and pallet numbers. Attach the placard to the pallet. Using a fork truck, move the pallet to the stretch wrapper and stretch wrap the pallet. Move the full pallet to the stock room using a fork truck. Take a sample from the product spout after every fifth pallet is completed to ensure necessary quality of the product. Screened Stone Operations -  Run Modules: Follow established procedure for start-up and shutdown of equipment using computer. Obtain sample of product from upper level of Screened Stone area every hour. Provide samples of product to the lab for analysis. Hand screen product on the ½ hour. Adjust color of product by adjusting the feed from other bins into the product bin. Determine the level of the product and feed bins using knowledge of the inventory levels at the start of the shift as well as production rates of the current shift. Monitor the product and feed bin inventories and adjust as necessary using buttons to start the system for more products. Troubleshoot equipment problems as they arise and determine best course of action to take to correct the issue. Unplug elevators, screen modules and screws when needed. Make sure all water pumps are operational to prevent flooding equipment in certain areas. Load Bulk Trucks & Railcars: Using a fall arrest system, open lid on top of tanker and inspect the inside to ensure no contaminants exist. Put product hose into opening, and open valves. Take a sample from the product spout after every fifth pallet is completed to ensure necessary quality of the product. Secondary, Crushing, & Drying (SCD) Operation -  Equipment: Operate L-150D front end loader Inspect all vehicles once per shift and fuel them up once per day. Inspect and clean the magnets, jaw crusher, belts, impactor, dust collector 170 and visually inspect the 1200-ton bins once per shift. Stone Supply: Push stone up into piles using loader to allow space for new loads from the quarry to be dumped at SCD area. Inspect stone pile in SCD area for large stones to ensure appropriately sized stone is used in the system. Fill hoppers at SCD with appropriate color of stone with a loader. Load dump truck with product from bins, transport to hoppers and/or onto the pile on the slab once per hour (seasonally). Use dump truck to transport by-product from SCD area to agstone pile as needed. SCD Operations -  Follow established procedure for start-up and shutdown of equipment using computer. Obtain sample of product from BLT 158 every hour. Prepare samples according to procedure and test for Rd & b-values. Adjust color of product by adjusting the stone mix in the feed hoppers. Monitor the product and feed bin inventories and adjust, as necessary. Troubleshoot equipment problems as they arise and determine best course of action to take to correct the issue. Unplug elevators, screws, conveyors, crushers and screens when needed. Monitor the level of the product in hoppers and bins and adjust to ensure necessary product flow of appropriate color and to maintain inventories. Monitor the bag house and dryer temperatures as well as belt and crusher kilowatts and adjust as needed. Unplug hoppers and other SCD related equipment when needed. Load Trucks: Load trucks under the product bin by lowering shroud with button controls, filling truck to appropriate capacity, as per the established procedure based on product and/or customer specifications and putting shroud back in original position using button controls. Load trucks from the pile on the slab with a loader as per established procedure. Miscellaneous -  Record pertinent labor and/or production information from the work shift. Weigh in trucks using scale as needed. Complete safety inspection sheets for work areas and/or mobile equipment. Communicate with individuals internal and external to the organization, providing/gathering information as needed. Fuel and grease all equipment as needed. Other Duties & Responsibilities -  Operate sweeper to maintain appropriate cleanliness throughout work areas. Operate other mobile equipment such as fork trucks, dump trucks, skid steer, and jockey as needed in performing duties. Assist maintenance staff with repairs of equipment as needed. Clean and organize work area using equipment/tools, as necessary. Train other employees to learn the duties of the job. Perform other duties as assigned. Use loader to assist other mobile equipment when they are unable to move without assistance. Empty bins as needed. Education :   High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience : Prior experience using heavy equipment is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of the English language and basic math is required. Knowledge of commercial motor vehicles and manufacturing/production processes is preferred. While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically required to have the ability to exert physical strength throughout the work shift, coordinate movements, use repetitive motions, have the ability to operate mobile equipment, including commercial motor vehicles on public roads, regularly sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, reach, lift, twist, push and pull throughout a work shift, work in confined spaces, have manual dexterity, lift materials weighing up to and including 50 pounds, select and use appropriate equipment/tools to accomplish job duties, read, write, listen, speak and understand English, follow all instructions and other oral/written information, visually inspect equipment/work area/product, use judgement to determine what stone to use in operations, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately, identify, analyze, troubleshoot and solve equipment/work area/product issues, quickly respond to equipment/product signals, keep pace with equipment as needed, use judgement to determine when additional resources are needed to address issues, communicate effectively with others, record labor distribution/production information from the work shift in writing and/or on a personal computer, be aware of oneself in relation to surrounding equipment, work independently and as a team with others, and use, monitor and adjust equipment and related processes. Ability to instruct/transfer job information/knowledge to others is preferred. Being under general supervision, the employee is expected to be self-directed, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and keep busy without prompting from the supervisor and/or Team Lead. Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable/flexible to changing work assignments, perform multiple tasks at once, have a high level of integrity, dependability and self control to maintain composure, learn and memorize procedures, prioritize work, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative attitude, read, understand and follow all company, job specific/safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training. Incumbents must also meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations/requirements as they apply to this job. Work Hours :   Must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary.
Working Conditions :  While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly exposed to dust, loud noise, high places, and outside weather conditions including very low and/or bright light. Primarily works alone but also as part of a team. Works in proximity with equipment.
