Position Summary This posting will be used to fill two part-time Repository Student Technician positions at the Oregon State University Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR). These student technicians will perform a wide variety of curatorial tasks at OSU-MGR, including inventorying, racking, and labelling geologic samples, primarily marine sediment cores. Student technicians will also assist with processing samples for long-term storage following standard curation protocols.

The work will require sustained physical effort and the use of hand tools, saws, and simple power equipment, often within a refrigerated space and at height. Student technicians will assist with sample requests by retrieving / racking requested materials from the collections as well as collecting samples from time to time. Student technicians will also assist with the curation of legacy collections, including the use of instrumentation for characterization of the samples. The employee will be supervised, trained, and assigned tasks by the curatorial staff of the repository.

The student technicians will become familiar with many of the basic principles of marine geology and data management. There will be an opportunity to participate in data collection and present at an undergraduate research symposium.


Position Duties Process samples for long-term storage by cutting samples in half using saws, preparing surfaces for imaging, and collecting images of samples Load geological samples into racking to assign storage locations Assist with physical inventory of samples, including digital entry of sample data Label samples with appropriate identifiers, print and affix labels Move pallets of samples using pallet jacks, dollies, and carts Minimum Qualifications Full Employment Eligibility Requirements can be found here:


Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term* Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications Work requires walking, standing, bending and stooping for extended periods, often in refrigerated spaces and/or at height Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 40 lbs Detail-oriented Ability to follow instructions, ask questions as needed, and work independently Preferred (Special) Qualifications Previous experience working in refrigerated spaces Pursuing a bachelor's degree in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) Familiar with geologic samples and scientific research collections Familiar with portable electronic devices and digital data entry, including Microsoft Excel Working Conditions / Work Schedule 20 hours per week during summer 10 hours per week when enrolled in classes during the school year Posting Detail Information
