Job Title: Managing Editor Job Summary: FedWriters seeks an innovative and passionate Managing Editor to lead the publication of cutting-edge research that shapes and influences criminal justice policy and practice. This pivotal role offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with top experts within the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), drive impactful change, and enhance the journal's contribution to advancing justice and public safety.
Responsibilities Include: Coordinating with NIJ executive staff and subject matter experts to develop story ideas Contacting authors and providing guidance on the story's angle, tone, and format Writing articles and other components for the NIJ Journal, including one article per issue, the Director's message, two-page bulletin spread, and summaries for NIJ.ojp.gov Coordinating the review of drafts with NIJ staff and other individuals Participating in planning discussions, preparing schedules, recommending content, and supporting executive staff meetings related to the NIJ Journal Coordinating review among authors, DOJ, external reviewers, and NIJ executive staff Coordinating copyediting and proofreading of manuscripts Leading NIJ Journal board meetings and acting as the secretariat of the board Overseeing production activities, including layout and printing Submitting laser proofs to NIJ for approval and printer specifications Preparing and delivering the printer package and files for posting to the NIJ website Ensuring the delivery of web-ready files (e.g., HTML, images) and 508-compliant PDFs Managing the production of both online and print editions of the journal, ensuring timely release and distribution Required Qualifications and Skills: At least five years of directly relevant work experience in writing and editing publications and various documents Excellent writing skills and knowledge of style guidelines Strong organizational and project management skills Ability to coordinate with diverse stakeholders, including authors, reviewers, and executive staff Experience in overseeing publication production processes, including layout and printing Desired: Familiarity with creating 508-compliant documents Work Setting and Environment: Monday - Friday, normal working hours Work is to be performed remotely How FedWriters Will Compensate and Appreciate You: FedWriters offers team members the opportunity to gain a lasting impression in this fast-growing small business.
