Position 1, Natural Resources Research Scientist - Senior:
This position within the Division of Forestry, Forest Ecology and Economics section will help manage and analyze datasets for a wide variety research projects with an emphasis on data from an innovative project that aims to add greater complexity to homogeneous stands of northern pine. Research will involve creating and analyzing a relatively novel, long-term, and spatially explicit datasets. Research may also include reconstructing fire history in collaboration with the USFS, evaluating effects of prescribed burning on heterobasidion root disease (HRD) infected stands, and oak wilt containment efficacy. Research projects are highly collaborative, focusing on research and application of science to forest ecology and management, which will provide the successful applicant many opportunities to grow and develop a varied skill set. Our research needs require a data scientist with experience working independently and as part of a team, statistical analyses, and building and maintaining databases to be utilized by internal and external partners.
Duties include designing and managing databases, assisting with statistical analysis, writing reports and summarizing data for ongoing projects, and manuscript preparation.
Position 2, Forester - Senior:
This position within the Division of Forestry, Forest Ecology and Economics section will also coordinate and conduct a variety of forestry work in the field including data collection and the set up and maintenance of study sites and demonstration areas. This position will collect and maintain spatial data in a GIS and perform spatial data analyses for a variety of forestry projects. This position will also require working and communicating with internal and external partners including USFS, state, and county foresters. The position will use skills and technical abilities related to the development of new, innovative silviculture systems including establishing marking guidelines for managers as well as relatively new silviculture applications of prescribed fire. Other skillsets include the ability to use Arc GIS software and program R (or similar) to review and analyze spatial datasets, independently build geodatabases, and design apps for spatial data collection. The successful candidate will be expected to resolve technical problems and work independently and as a member of a team.
