The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge seeks a caring and innovative Lower School Spanish Language Teacher for the ******** academic year to work with PreK through 5th-grade students through a FLES program.  In addition to teaching the language, this individual will incorporate lessons on the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries to strengthen students' cultural knowledge and raise their global awareness. Episcopal's Lower School is a community of teachers who embrace the whole-child educational philosophy and who help students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them, academic skills, development of physical, social, and emotional skills, and an understanding of their responsibility to their community through a variety of instructional methods. This is a ten-month full-time position with an annual renewal beginning in August 2024.
Description of School Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, a college preparatory educational community of approximately 950 students and approximately 170 professionals, includes grades PreK-3 through 12 that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy. General Duties Teach weekly Prek3 - 5th-grade classes; develop and lead effective, creative, and developmentally appropriate lessons that are student-centered, meet students where they are, and incorporate a variety of instructional methods, including project-based learning, and comprehensible input or TPRS.  Work collaboratively with Lower School French teacher, homeroom teachers, and other specialists to plan and implement lessons with horizontal alignment. Collaborate with administrators and Lower School and Middle School faculty to ensure proper vertical alignment of content and skills. Evaluate student learning through a variety of assessments and communicate student progress to administrators, students, and families. Attend scheduled faculty/division/department meetings after school and regularly scheduled meetings with colleagues and administrators during the day. Participate in professional development.  Perform additional faculty duties assigned, including, but not limited to, supervising students during carpool, lunch, recess, and so forth. Personal and Professional Characteristics and Experiences A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Spanish Language, certification to teach Spanish language, or a native speaker with a Bachelor's degree is required. Experience teaching Spanish in Lower School is desirable. Appreciation for and understanding of the developmental characteristics of this age group. A passion for global education and helping students to understand other cultures. Understanding the importance of nurturing social-emotional development in young children. Creativity in lesson design that balances content, skill, and student self-direction through the use of a variety of instructional methods including project-based learning. Experience with project-based learning and/or comprehensible input or TPRS  is preferred. Collaborative spirit when working with colleagues within the same division and across divisions. Excellent classroom management skills that promote a positive classroom environment. Familiarity with Responsive Classroom is a plus. An ability to communicate clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues. Dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive Episcopal school community. Strong organizational skills, ability to juggle many responsibilities, and adaptability to change. Familiarity with technology or ability and desire to learn about technology for lesson design, lesson implementation, and recording student progress.
