Position Title: Legal Assistant for Unaccompanied Minors

Primary Function of Position As a Legal Assistant for Unaccompanied Minors, you will play a pivotal role in our Immigration Program by offering clerical support to the program and collaborating directly with clients under the guidance and supervision of our legal staff.
Major Position Responsibilities Commitment to Mission: Uphold the mission of Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) and the immigration and refugee resettlement programs. Clerical Duties: Handle various clerical tasks, including maintaining client files (both digital and physical), scheduling appointments, communicating with clients, and relaying messages for legal staff via email and phone. Paralegal Support: Perform paralegal duties under legal staff supervision. This involves meeting with clients directly, collecting necessary documents and client information for legal forms, gathering client responses to questionnaires, and handling application mailings. Eligibility Communication: Clearly communicate with clients and community partners regarding eligibility for CCS Immigration Program Services. Know Your Rights Presentations: Conduct Know Your Rights presentations and legal screening interviews for minors as required. Case Documentation: Thoroughly document all case work in the client's file or the electronic filing system. Interpretation and Translation: Provide interpretation and translation services as needed. Confidentiality Adherence: Maintain strict attorney/client confidentiality. Other duties as assigned. Work Environment This role is in a professional office environment, utilizing standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.? Physical Demands While primarily a sedentary role, some filing tasks are involved. This entails lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasionally bending or standing as needed.? Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Organizational and Planning Skills: Proficient in organizing and planning tasks effectively. Independence and Prioritization: Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills. Effective Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Deadline Adherence: Committed to meeting CCS and other agency deadlines. Flexibility and Adaptability: Adaptable and flexible in various work scenarios. Team Collaboration: Works effectively as part of a team. Confidentiality Maintenance: Demonstrates the ability to maintain client case confidentiality. Computer Proficiency: Advanced word processing and computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel. Personal Qualities: Exhibits openness, compassion, and graciousness when assisting clients with legal challenges. Education, Training, and Experience Educational Requirements: a Bachelor's Degree, Paralegal Certification, or equivalent experience. Bilingual Proficiency: Proficient in both Spanish and English. Microsoft Office 365 Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant Microsoft Office 365 applications. Keyboarding and Data Entry Skills: Competence in keyboarding and accurate data entry. Office Management Knowledge: Understanding of office management systems and procedures. Immigration Law Experience: Preferred experience in immigration law. Law Office or Child-Related Experience: Preferred experience working in a law office or with children. Background Screening Requirement Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.? Licenses, certifications, and credentials? None Position status and expected schedule The general work schedule encompasses up to 20-25 hours to be distributed between Monday and Friday, with the work hours falling between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
